Title: Need Help With Admin Password
Post by: GtHawk on March 07, 2023, 03:54:01 pm
My son gave me an ASSUS gaming laptop a while back and I updated it from Win 8.1 to Win 10 and since then it won't accept my sons pin code so now we can't add any new software. My son tried the Microsoft recovery site and no joy, also it looks for an old email address that doesn't exist because the  company he worked for and got the computer from EyeFi no longer exists. Any ideas short of a wipe and reinstall?

In addition to your son's pin code, he will also have a separate password for his account. Has that been tried? Did you run from his account when you upgraded to Win10 or did you use the admin account and password?

I ran the upgrade from his account, i had no issues with Admin when using his pin code, as to password he can't recall. His boss told him to take the computer when EyeFi laid him off in 2015 and the company went completely out of business in 2016 so that ave is closed. I thought I once read that there are programs to access the Admin password because this situation apparently is a frequent issue with yard sale computer purchases.  I was just hoping that a member with more computer savvy than me(most everyone) would have an idea.

Try logging into the BIOS.  Not sure if they still do it this way, but the default Administrator account came without a password.  If you can log into the BIOS setup as 'Administrator', you can reset other users' passwords.

On startup, continuously hit the F2/F4/F8/F11/F12 (depending on model) key to bypass the normal start.  And go from there.

I don't know how it's done in Windows, but on the Mac side of things, when a company provides a computer to an employee, the IT department will usually put some kind of proprietary software on it (on the Mac side it's called "MDM") that can over-ride the employee's attempts to "wipe it clean". This is in the firmware, not "on the hard drive", so it can't be "removed" by changing drives.

The only way to "get full control back" is to have the MDM software removed, almost always by the IT department that installed it. There are ways around this, but they're tricky and not approved by Apple. Generally, Apple will refuse to remove such software unless the owner can provide proof of initial ownership (sales receipt, etc.).

I'll guess that almost certainly there is similar software on the PC/Windows side of things.

I'll also guess that there are more tricks and workarounds to overcome it on the PC side, too. But although I could solve almost any problem a Mac user here has, I know nothing of PC's.

Damn dude, what an awful week for you!

Glad to hear you're home and on the mend. So I take it the hernia caused a rupture that got things quickly infected and it went sideways from there. Was this just an out of the blue event or is this an ongoing issue (if I may ask)?

I have had a Spigelian hernia in my belly button for decades.. Fixing it is elective unless it begins to strangle the intestine, which is basically what started the whole thing. When I could no longer push things around, that is indicative of real damage, and my doc always said if I get to where I cannot manipulate the gut under the belly button, then I better surely get to a surgeon... So that is what started it...

But evidently, it was swelling in the stomach wall due to infection - the colon was never at risk... But the infection came from somewhere, right? Evidently that was bladder/ prostate stuff, which is identified but still not resolved. Whether it is just infection, or something more has to wait until everything calms down.

And as a tertiary, and most serious problem, the infection had spread enough to cause coronary trouble, along with the surgery on the hernia - The anesthesia caused an afib condition, and they finally gave me a jump start to get things going right again.

But, the heart, while involved, is clear of blockage, and operating alright. And the likely scenario is that everything will go back to natural as I get away from the anesthetic and take the weight (of fluid) off the system - I lost more than 30 lbs to water drained off...

All pretty crazy Had no idea. Was pissin fine, but underlying was a hyperextended bladder and everythig floating in way too much water.

Thanks for your kind concern.

Admin pwd... I need to be clear on what you mean...
Is that a WINDOWS administrative password, or a CMOS/BIOS password?
Is it coming straight through to a Windows login? Can you log into windows?
Hope so because if that is the case, it's a piece of cake.

IF NOT - If it is a BIOS password, Asus is a pretty reliable crack with about an 80% or better rate... Though I may not be able to get the hard drive back... About a 50% success... And I will need it all in my hands. Sorry.

But hopefully is it just a windows password unencumbered by drive encryption.

If so all you need is the proper installation set on a thumb, get it to boot to the thumb, and do a full rub and reinstall. You will get the opportunity to enter a new admin pwd during installation.

Or I can recommend a tool to change an NT PWD, including admin from a boot disk, and crack it proper with no install... But if it is an old installation, and an upgrade, A full rub would be recommended, if you don't stand to lose something you need.

I believe it is the Windows Administrative password, prior to doing the upgrade to Win 10 I used my sons pin code and had no problem loading software or using the computer. After the upgrade Windows allowed me to enter a new password and use Windows and Win 10 seems fully functional but it no longer accepted my sons pin code and after seven years he had no recollection of any other password or code so no administrator access.

I was thinking that maybe pulling off any important information and doing a format and reinstall might be best, it just means that I need to buy a copy of Win 10.

Well, AGAIN, depending highly on if the drive is bitlocked - You can tell if you can remove the drive and copy anything onto it (then it is NOT bitlocked)...

A couple things o try - If there are any users onboard with administrative privileges, then that user can be used to change the admin password/pin simply by waking up (making active) the admin so it is visible from within other users. But straight away, the tool I am sending by pim will do that anyway - You could simply change the admin password, or elevate another user to admin, so still the same answer either way.

However, if you DO need to reload (which is recommended instead of a skanky upgrade with hacks to allow access), you do not need to buy Win10.

You merely need to know which version of win10 is onboard (Home, Pro, Ultimate) (64bit vs 32bit... Likely 64bit), download and make media on a thumb, set the machine to boot to the thumb and away you go.

The media builder is available from Microsoft HERE:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Page down to 'Create Windows 10 installation media'
And push the button. RTFM.

You have pim.

Thank you for posting that. I have been holding a lot of fluid in my stomach  for decades now,and have been blaming it on Agent Orange. In the last year I see to have been growing a "companion" belly button to keep company with the one I was born with.

I WILL be getting that checked out with my  next appointment with a surgeon.

As far as @GtHawk and his Administrator Password issue.  It's an old Laptop and I can understand your reluctance in just wiping out and starting over.  All the Drivers would be hard or next to impossible to download, which means some Motherboard components will not work.
There are password recovery CD's on EBAY that boot in Linx and manipulate the Microsoft SAM Database.  I haven't used them since Win7.  Good Luck.
