Radical Lefty Teacher Whines That Fireworks Are Too Much Like ‘Pretend War’
Posted By Eric Owens On 11:49 AM 07/05/2014

Just in time for Independence Day, an old lefty teacher has trotted out a bunch of tired canards about the American Revolutionary War.

Writing for a website called The Zinn Education Project, the teacher, Bill Bigelow, also manages to criticize American firework displays on the Fourth of July because “the United States is waging war with real fireworks around the world.”

Bigelow claims that “U.S. drone attacks have killed at least 2,600 people in five countries, including as many as 247 children” since 2001. He also charges that the Iraq War began in 2003 with “shock and awe” – which is a lot like fireworks, sort of – and has created “seemingly endless internecine fighting.”

For Bigelow, it somehow follows, in the very same paragraph even, that “[t]he pretend war of celebratory fireworks thus becomes part of a propaganda campaign that inures us – especially the children among us – to current and future wars half a world away.”

While stopping short of telling a bunch of damn kids to get off his lawn, the obscure Portland, Ore. teacher further bellyaches that fireworks create too much noise, cause injuries, start fires and can even lead to lung inflammation.

Bigelow then gets to the real reason for his rant, which is to criticize American middle-school and high-school history and social studies curricula for not being sufficiently leftist or revisionist.

The entire point of the Zinn Education Project, after all, is to promote Howard Zinn’s book “A People’s History of the United States” in taxpayer-funded public school classrooms.

Zinn, who died in 2010, called himself an enthusiast of “democratic socialism.”

His best-selling book is a sloppy, embarrassingly shallow, biased hack job which sees virtually every political issue through the myopic lens of class conflict.

Bigelow criticizes Thomas Jefferson by suggesting that he stole his idea for the Declaration of Independence and was but a pawn amid the forces of “nationwide political upheaval.”

He criticizes George Washington for giving “the orders of a war criminal” concerning the “genocidal Sullivan campaign, one of the largest military offensives of the war, which burned Iroquois villages and destroyed every orchard and farm in its path to deny food to Indians.”

Naturally, the comfortable Portland resident complains about “American ‘settler’ expansion” in the 1780s, too.

He also suggests that the founders of the United States didn’t lead the American Revolution at all. Instead, he claims, “the people decided that the old regime must fall.”

Bigelow then ends on a rant involving a speech Frederick Douglass gave roughly a decade before the Civil War and Republican Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

A “recent episode of Democracy Now!” and Danny Glover also garner mentions. (RELATED: ‘Lethal Weapon’ Actor Tells Students Second Amendment Was Intended To Preserve Slavery)

As EAGnews.org notes, fireworks celebrations of all shapes and sizes have been an American tradition since the day before this magnificent country even existed. In a letter dated July 3, 1776, John Adams declared to his wife, Abigail Adams, that the founding “ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Geez.

Reminds me of a lefty I knew in undergrad who had a massive hissy fit in public because the ROTC folks were having a practice run-around in the ROTC quadrangle on campus one evening wearing cammys and carrying dummy rifles; she happened to walk through that quadrangle at the time and got spooked when a couple of them came running around the corner of a building.

The Iraq War started it all?

Forget 9/11 (wasn't that 'fireworks?')  Forget the invasion of Afghanistan (the "good" war, right?)

All this fighting in the ME began with toppling Saddam Hussein.

Yeah.

Right.

Leftists are never happy.  They oppose comfortable toilet paper.

Except for themselves.

And also... if it weren't for those "fireworks", Mr. Bigelow wouldn't have the freedom to open his mouth and express his dumb-ass opinions, unless he were among the...ruling...class...

Hmmm. Now just what do you imagine people like this secretly wish for themselves?

And bottled water for themselves too.  You ever catch any symposium, they are all drinking bottled water.  I truly believe it's related to the docility fluorodation causes.  Much easier to control the unwashed.

Any progressive thinks they are going to be in the ruling class, whether by being in academia, media, or one of the wealthy elite VIPs that don't have to adhere to the rules like the rest of us will.  Otherwise, why would anyone want to live like that?

Strange how these academics forget the lessons provided by Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot. That they are the first ones sent to the camps, not the last.
