Title: Huge tornado forms over Gulf of Mexico off Destin beach
Post by: cato potatoe on August 16, 2022, 11:40:52 pm
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA/NBC News Channel) – A tornado formed over the Gulf of Mexico off a Florida beach on Tuesday and it was captured on video.

The video was shot at Silver Shells Beach Spa and Resort in Destin, in the Florida Panhandle.

According to Max Defender 8 Weather Team Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist Jeff Berardelli, though the formation is being referred to as a “water spout,” it’s really a tornado over the water, not a typical Florida summer waterspout.

It was a damn water spout.  Not a tornado.

People need to get a grip. Jeff Berardelli is a hack.

Right, but is it a tornadic waterspout?  A couple of articles said it was connected to a rotating thunderstorm (supercell).

They're calling it a "Tornado," because it was an exceptionally large water spout.  A "Super Waterspout?"

I have seen a couple of dozen water spouts off the the TX/LA gulf coast.  None of them looked that menancing.  They mostly were small rope twisters that were more of a novelty than a major weather event.

This is silly, and semantics.

A twister over land  is called a tornado.
A twister over water is called a waterspout.

there are other definitions for smaller versions - a dust devil or a water sprite...

Whatever you call it, I bet it made the people there on the beach pucker up.
