Mark Sanford suspends 2020 presidential campaign
CNN)Mark Sanford, the former South Carolina governor and congressman who two months ago launched a longshot primary challenge to President Donald Trump, suspended his candidacy Tuesday.
"I am suspending my race for the Presidency because impeachment has made my goal of making the debt, deficit and spending issue a part of this presidential debate impossible right now," Sanford said in a statement. "From day one, I was fully aware of how hard it would be to elevate these issues with a sitting president of my own party ignoring them. Impeachment noise has moved what was hard to herculean as nearly everything in Republican Party politics is currently viewed through the prism of impeachment."
Sanford -- who emerged as a vocal Republican critic of the President before losing his congressional seat in a GOP primary contest last year -- made the announcement during a press conference at the New Hampshire statehouse.

Rush mentioned the news about Sanford while he was making the point that Nikki Haley’s book and tv appearances are proof that the GOP is Trump’s, saying she seems to have evolved in her support and defense of Trump, and if someone wants a future in republican politics they had better understand this.
Sanford, by withdrawing his challenge to Trump is just further proof, according to Rush, that the party is consolidating behind Trump.

Two months after he entered the race, former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford has ended his long-shot bid for president.
Sanford, a Trump critic, failed to catch traction in the Republican primary, where President Donald Trump remains popular.
"It was a longshot, but we wanted to try and interject this issue, how much we're spending, into the national debate which comes along once every four years," he said Tuesday in New Hampshire outside the statehouse. "I don't think on the Republican side there's any appetite for a serious nuanced debate with impeachment in the air."
So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, good riddance ...

Oh well, there is always Bill Weld or Gary Johnston.

The headline says Sanford is "suspending" his campaign and he mentions the impeachment proceedings coming up. So that makes me wonder if Sanford is going to wait to see if Trump is tossed out in the next several months and if so, he will be back.

Another "candidate" about whom I had completely forgotten. 999yawn

Maybe Sanford sees himself as Little Mike's running mate.

Third Party Kookism?
seriously.
This site is largely a concentration of poor political instincts and impracticality.
Think when Eisenhower needed to decide to invade France. Upon hearing the weather reports, he said let's go.
Some of loudest voices here, always contrarian, always citing storybook choices, frequently picking losers, would have had the allies floating around in the English channel for months in hope of ideal weather.
If it isn't Sanford, it is Castle.

Do you include yourself in this statement?
We are allowed to have differences of opinion, you know.

FACTS.
I don't disagree, but recognizing uncomfortable facts and doing the best that can be done under the circumstances is the hallmark of mature leadership. Embarking on a quixotic campaign that you know from the start is doomed to failure looks like vanity, not virtue.

No, continuing to support what you don't want, in fear of what you don't want even more, is hardly a sign of maturity. That in fact, is the quixotic move... and doomed from the start - You will not get what you want, no matter what.
Foolishness on parade.
-
Roamer, I'm coming along to your way of thinking more and more . . .
Sorry for the disappointment @Jazzhead ... This is why I don't get too involved till the field shakes out.

True. But then again, I'm not supporting something I don't want. I want and support more conservative justices, and I'm getting them. I wanted Trump to do all he reasonably could to control illegal immigration, and he's been doing that despite renegade federal judges. Looks like he's finally going to be permitted to kill DACA. I wanted reductions in regulations, I wanted us not to sign onto global warming madness, and I wanted us to stay away from single payer. Trump has given me all of that. Oh, and badly needed business tax reform that has helped foster the longer expansion in history.
So I wasn't just voting against the left -- I was voting for some things as well that I actually did get.
I also wanted entitlement reform, and really liked Ryan's plan to convert it to block grants. But I wasn't going to get that with Democrats either, so it's a non-issue at this point.

And it's not as if any of the alternatives to Trump will come close to achieving what he has, even if he's not perfect.

Let me mark you down in the political adult collumn. Good instincts, good judgment too.

The best cure for a brain worm song is a worse brain worm. Something by Abba would work for me. Or maybe Sherri Lewis' "Song that Never Ends".
I realize TDS is a thing, but how Sanford imagined he had the national recognition to get Any Democrat elected instead of Trump is beyond my ken.
