Female Genital Mutilation in the United States: Estimating the Number of Girls at Risk

Last month, the Department of Justice dismissed FGM charges against Dr. Jumana Nagarwala (left) and Dr. Fakhuruddin Attar (right) on the grounds that the U.S. law banning the practice is unconstitutional.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is not at all like male circumcision. Despite the politically correct preference for calling it "genital cutting," FGM is usually far more than a mere cut.

It is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the external female genitalia (or any other injury to the female genitals) for non-medical reasons.
