Pentagon: Chinese spy balloon spotted over Western US

The U.S. is tracking a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that has been spotted over U.S. airspace for a couple days, but the Pentagon decided not to shoot it down due to risks of harm for people on the ground, officials said Thursday.
A senior defense official told Pentagon reporters that the U.S. has “very high confidence” it is a Chinese high-altitude balloon and it was flying over sensitive sites to collect information. One of the places the balloon was spotted was Montana, which is home to one of the nation’s three nuclear missile silo fields at Malmstrom Air Force Base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information.
Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, provided a brief statement on the issue, saying the government continues to track the balloon. He said it is “currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground.” ...
The Pentagon announcement comes days before Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to travel to China. It’s not clear if this will affect his travel plans, which the State Department has not formally announced.

The U.S. government is monitoring a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that has been moving over northern states over the past several days.
Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said during a briefing on Thursday afternoon that the U.S. government has detected a high-altitude surveillance balloon over the continental U.S.
"The United States government has detected and is tracking a high-altitude surveillance balloon that is over the continental United States right now. The U.S. government to include Norad, continues to track and monitor it closely. The balloon is currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground. Instances of this kind of balloon activity have been observed previously over the past several years. Once the balloon was detected, the U.S. government acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information," Ryder said.
A senior defense official said that the U.S. government is "confident" that the surveillance balloon belongs to the People's Republic of China.
The defense official said that the balloon was recently over Montana, and that officials were considering bringing the plane down with military assets, but decided against doing so because of the risks associated, adding that President Biden was briefed on the situation and asked for military options.

Yes, as do we. But there is no justification for destroying orbiting satellites in regard to a balloon in US airspace. Nor has China even threatened that. Someone in our government is making up weak-ass excuses to cover for their cowardly inaction.
My point is, if we cave now.... We'll never stop.
That's the gist of it. Through half a century in government, there is not a single instance where Joe Biden made the correct call when it comes to foreign policy. Not a single one.
I say drop that bubble with a drone when it is over an unpopulated area.
We should have dropped it the second China denied it was theirs. And we should have done it with a space-based laser just to show China what we are capable of. That way, they would have nothing to protest.

Yep, that is the gist of it. Their camera technology is not good enough to get close-up photos of missile silos from space, so they had to find a way to get the camera closer.

Correct, but the trends underway suggest otherwise. That moment or soon after when the Chicoms surpass us in GDP will likely be followed by some form of a currency reset. That will be when the SHTF, and we start circling the drain.
They'll be the economic superpower, and a nation like ours that leveraged itself (by that time.... 200-300% of debt to GDP ratio?), will slump into 3rd world status.

Yeah, I'd yell 3- Amen's except for the fact we do not have a manufacturing base that will supplant the nation's needs for goods, services, and supplies. Your government via rules, laws, regulations, and anti-business practices through the past 50 or so years has turned this economy into a service economy shamble.
In 1955 one in 4 jobs were in the manufacturing sector. Now that number is about 1 in 10. And those numbers continue to drop rapidly. There is no way to sustain a country's economy on that. At least not for long.

China is a superpower, in a smartest-kid-on-the-short-bus kind of way.
Their economy is a house of cards. They may actually be worse off then us. Most of what we see is fake, façade, and managed PR.
They are really too opaque to really tell what is going on. Except from debt perspective, I can almost 100% guarantee that we win that aspect, or more factually lose. And that will be the factor at least in this country that ultimately dooms us, as we succumb the crown to the Chicoms.

Since "Watter's World" in the 7PM hour, it's being announced there has been a large explosion over the sky near Billings, Montana.
The Montana governor is appearing on the Tucker Carlson show right now. He said he wasn't even informed of the balloon until it was hundreds of miles into 'Montana airspace'. He was pissed.
NOTE: Neither Jesse Watters or Tucker Carlson are suggesting there is a link between the 'explosion' and a supposed 2nd balloon which had been traversing Canada.
Personally, I don't see how it wasn't shot down already. Even if they were using the latitude/longitude locations as 'targets' for their intercontinental missiles. They should be toast right now.

Correct, but the trends underway suggest otherwise. That moment or soon after when the Chicoms surpass us in GDP will likely be followed by some form of a currency reset. That will be when the SHTF, and we start circling the drain.

It is nothing more than a backup to the real time broadcast,and chances are there is a "fail safe" in every satellite that causes it to explode if it drops below a minimum height,or receives serious damage that would cause it to crash.

The Biden administration is releasing details on how exactly the military effort to shoot down a Chinese spy balloon off the coast of South Carolina unfolded.
A senior military official said on Saturday that the Chinese spy balloon was shot down at 2:39 p.m. on Saturday by one air-to-air A9X sidewinder missile fired by an F-22 Raptor that took off from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
The aircraft fired the missile at an altitude of 58,000 feet while the balloon was hovering at an altitude of between 60,000 and 65,000 feet.
The balloon was shot down about six nautical miles off the coast off South Carolina and the debris field is said to be roughly seven miles wide.

Two things here. First of all, if you are acknowledging it as a "Chinese surveillance balloon", then why didn't you stop it from conducting surveilance.
Secondly, why did you target the payload, and do it with enough force to separate it from the balloon, allowing uninhibited free fall? If you had punctured the balloon instead, the drag from the balloon would have kept it's fall under 30 mph.

Let's say they shot it down over eastern Montana.
Temperatures this time of year are generally some where between zero and just freezing (32F).
There's a fair amount of snow pack out there, but it blows thin in places.
Imagine trying to search terrain that varies from rolling prairie to badlands in those conditions, with 15MPH considered a light breeze.
If the remains fell near a populated area, souvenir hunters would be a problem.
Current situation: warm weather, controlled access, scene secure. A seven mile debris field is a lot of water (and bottom) to cover.
And I agree, that a more gentle balloon buster might have brought the package down more in one chunk, but it is likely there is a barometric fused self destruct on board anyway.

The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard are working to establish a perimeter around where the balloon fell into the Atlantic Ocean and is searching for debris, a senior defense official said. The search is expected to be “fairly easy,” given that the balloon was shot down in a shallow area, the official said in a statement.
The surveillance balloon went down about six miles off the Carolina coast in about 47 feet of water, after an F-22 fighter fired one missile at the balloon, according to the Air Force press release.
However, despite falling in relatively shallow water, the official said there is no estimate for how long it will take to recover the debris.

Navy divers are working to recover debris from the suspected Chinese spy balloon the U.S. shot down off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday.
U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships arrived to the site where the balloon hit the water on Saturday before establishing a perimeter around the area. Pentagon officials say the recovery effort is expected to be relatively easy thanks to the shallow depth of just under 50 feet, but it could still take days.
The U.S. military had put several vessels from the Navy and Coast Guard on alert prior to shooting down the balloon. Recovery efforts began later Saturday and continue Sunday, with divers facing few obstacles aside from cold water temperatures, according to the New York Times.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement that the balloon, which was being used to surveil "strategic sites" in the U.S., was an "unacceptable violation of our sovereignty." President Biden ordered the balloon shot down last week, but the military waited until the craft was over open water.

Operational ceilings get to be a problem. Only the F-15 operates at 65,000 ft. The F-22 has a stated ceiling of only 60,000. You'd have to fly above it to make a gun run, because of bullet drop.

If there wasn't gravity up there, they wouldn't need wings to stay aloft (the planes). If you can free fall from there, there's gravity.
There is a plus, however, air resistance is seriously lowered (which is why the engines tend to flame out above the operational ceilings the atmosphere is thin). What that does to the ballistic coefficient of the projectiles, i don't know, but it might make targeting more difficult, and the gun run would have to be like strafing (a nearly static target), not like getting behind a moving fighter.
