The Greatest Comedies of All Time
BY: Sonny Bunch
August 22, 2017 1:18 pm
The good folks at the Beeb have put together a ranking of the 100 greatest film comedies of all time. Compiled from top ten lists submitted by 253 film critics around the world, it is, I think, a pretty solid effort. But I'm biased, since they were kind enough to ask me to pitch in. Everyone on Twitter is very upset, naturally.
Here was my submission:

One, Two, Three
Cagney gave IMHO the single-best comedy performance ever.
-
Galaxy Quest
-
I would put "Idiocracy" up there. But more and more, it's looking like a documentary, rather than a comedy.
-
"Team America"
-
Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles should both be on the list.
-
Planes, Trains and Automobiles.....one of my favs
-
The full list from the BBC is here: http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20170821-the-100-greatest-comedies-of-all-time (http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20170821-the-100-greatest-comedies-of-all-time). One of my favorites, Duck Soup, came in at #5.

"The penis is evil. The penis shoots seeds, and makes new life, and poisons the earth with a plague of men, as once it was. But the gun shoots death, and purifies the earth of the filth of brutals. Go forth and kill!"
"Um, it was the 70’s, and I was doing a lot of drugs. Frankly, even I’m not entirely sure what parts of the movie are about.
John Boorman"
-
I'll throw in some older ones.
The court Jester
Young Frankenstein
Blazing saddles
Some Like It Hot
Arsenic And Old Lace
The Philadelphia Story
Singin In The Rain
-
I'd have Tropic Thunder somewhere on that list.
and Caddyshack (non-caddy parts). Daingerfield, Knight, Chase, and Murray.

"Do you have your rental agreement?"
You knew what was coming when that smirk came over Edie McClurg's face....LOL!
-
Since the topic doesn't specifically say movies, I'm gonna nominate two all-time best comedy series: Cheers and Rules of Engagement. Both for best comedy writing.

So I assume you never saw The Jerk @Wingnut ?
Aside from his politics, he was a pretty funny guy.

I saw it. Thought it was stupid. His leanings left or right has nothing to do with him being a no talent hack.

Well, that makes me feel better.
It's just a matter of who we think are funny.

Well that depends on what kind of mood you are in, lol.
Truthfully, if I'm really tired, mindless comedy satisfies my need. If I'm on point...give me some good subtle stuff.
Who do you consider funny? We may not disagree given my mood at the time.

Red Skelton, movies or TV, I always thought it was great when he would break up before he got the punchline out. We got to see him in concert and at his shop in Orange, Ca.

@GtHawk
The Red Skelton Show (old-time radio) (http://otrrlibrary.org/OTRRLib/Library%20Files/R%20Series/Red%20Skeleton%20Show/)
Examples don't seem to exist, but it was said that when Red Skelton was on radio tickets were heavily
coveted not so much for the broadcast show but for the after-show he put on---he was so wired up
from doing the show he had to blow off steam and those who got to see it said it was the funniest
thing in radio that nobody got to hear on the air.

@EasyAce
Thanks, I used to have a link to lot's of old radio shows. I guess I'm odd, I much prefer the old comedians and movies over the vast majority of what passes for comedy today.

Generally, so do I.
That's one reason I built a collection of over 15,000 old-time radio shows and counting.

Both good, if you liked Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit did you ever catch him in Hooper or the schlock City Heat with Clint Eastwood, wait it's supposed to be greatest comedies........sorry.

You are right. a reynolds movie will never rate high on a list of great comedy movies. Not even Cannonball run.
Deliverance...maybe.

Deliverance...maybe.
Best comedy ever, was probably the discussion when Ned Beatty fired his agent.

Reynolds wasn't the funny part of Smokey and the Bandit though. :)

I always thought Gleason was underrated, in his scope and range as a comedian.

I thought McLintock! was pretty funny...
-
Night at the Opera ...Say this table is set for four. That's nothing, my alarm clock is set for eight...
Animal Crackers Hooray for Captain Spaulding, the African explorer!
Young Frankenstein ...Frau Blucher [horses neighing]...
Monty Python and the Holy Grail ...go away you silly English-speaking pig-dogs or I will taunt you again...
The Princess Bride ...look who knows so much! It so happens your friend here is only mostly dead, and mostly dead is slightly alive!... (from which both Ted Cruz and I can quote extensive passages with voice characterizations from memory when the occasion arises)
Bringing Up Baby ...no, no, no it was most distinctly a loon...
The Producers (though the remake as an actual Broadway musical is better than the original movie)
-
Okay, off the beaten path...
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Flesh Gordon (An initially x-rated parody of Flash Gordon. You have to know the show from the serials, though, to really appreciate it.)
Jeff Dunham with Peanut, Ahmed the Dead Terrorist, etc. (World Tour)
Being There (Peter Sellers as Chance, the Gardener).
Young Frankenstein. Definitely.
Tim Conway's dentist skit (With Harvey Korman on Carol Burnett).
Pulp Fiction.
-
I thought McLintock! was pretty funny...
Donovans Reef wasn't bad either.

It comes in the final segment, but here are Groucho Marx and Margaret Dumont
re-enacting "Hooray for Captain Spauling" on the old Hollywood Palace,
1965 . . .
