Shutdown looms as Republicans struggle for votes

Senate Democrats say they have the votes to block a four-week funding plan, raising the likelihood the government will close.

The possibility of a government shutdown grew dramatically Thursday as House and Senate GOP leaders struggled to round up the votes to keep the government open past midnight Friday.

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) predicted that the House would pass a short-term funding measure on Thursday night. GOP leaders are gambling that rank-and-file Republicans won't want to risk being blamed for a shutdown and will end up supporting the short-term spending bill, which would keep the government open until Feb. 16.

But on the other side of the Capitol, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) appears to have a serious problem.

Senate Democrats said they're confident they have the votes to block the stop-gap spending bill that the House is taking up, according to two Democratic senators and a senior party aide. And top Senate Republicans are openly worried about the situation as they struggle to keep their own members in the fold.

Senate Dems say they have votes to block spending bill as shutdown edges closer

By Jordain Carney - 01/18/18 04:13 PM EST

Senate Democrats say they have secured the votes to block a House plan to fund the government through mid-February.

A Democratic aide confirmed that the caucus will be able to block Republicans from getting the 60 votes needed to overcome an initial procedural hurdle.

"Yes. And with the Republicans it's not close," the staffer told The Hill, asked whether Democrats will be able to block the legislation.

Pubs are their own worst enemies.

They shouldn't worry about the Rats at all. They should pass a CR in the House for a year and also pass an immigration bill contingent on the wall being completed with an end to chain migration and the visa lottery. Send both pieces of legislation to the Senate and let the Rats shut down the govt, eventually the Rats will feel the pressure and the votes to pass the bills will be there.

The Pubs won't do that though because they don't want to. They want to "compromise" and allow uncontrolled immigration to provide cheap labor for their chamber of commerce buddies.

Pelosi downplays DACA ahead of shutdown vote

By Mike Lillis - 01/18/18 03:32 PM EST

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that Democrats will oppose a short-term spending bill largely over concerns with health-care provisions, not "Dreamers," as she sought to shift the focus away from immigration.

“This isn't about Dreamers,” Pelosi said during a press briefing in the Capitol.         (emphasize mine)

“Even if not one Dreamer ever existed, we still have a problem on the budget side of this. This isn’t something that Dreamers are holding up. It’s about what isn’t in there to help meet the health needs of the American people.”

Meadows is playing a key role as House Republicans seek to get to 218 votes on their bill to prevent a shutdown. He insists the GOP doesn't have the votes yet because of opposition from his caucus.

A vote is expected Thursday night.

No deal after Trump calls Freedom Caucus

5:09 p.m.

Conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus are withholding their support from the House GOP bill, despite a call from President Trump into their meeting Thursday afternoon.

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), chairman of the Freedom Caucus, said there was no deal after the call.

...a Republican House plan to fund the government through mid-February.

This is the ONLY thing the Republican party knows or is willing to do:

Well what the hell happened to the immortal Art-Of-The-Dealmaker and his ability to strike the BEST deals for us little people that his rabid fanbase constantly assured us Trump would be able to achieve in his sleep?????

Perhaps Trump's superhuman feats of making "the Best" deals were all just a gargantuan lie??

Most people always understood that it was his lawyers hammering everything out and him saying 'OK.'  To their credit, they did get a porn star to accept a measly $130K for her story when she probably could have gotten much more from a book deal or tabloid.

'Most people' do not include the Trump fanatics who screeched, hollered and yammered on and on and on and on about the fact that Trump and ONLY TRUMP could make 'the best deals' that will get the government moving and working 'for the American people' again.

They were and are, True Believers - even in the face of incontrovertible contrary evidence to their claims.

Do you think most of the failures are Trump's fault, or the Pubs in the Congress?

I think Trump deserves credit for a lot of good things. It's Congress that has failed to deliver on Obamacare and immigration.

I had genuinely hoped that Trump's (self-described) great negotiating and deal-making skills would allow him to lead disparate parties to deals that couldn't otherwise be made by typical politicians.  Unfortunately, he doesn't appear to me to get engaged at a sufficient detail or to understand the legislative process (e.g., "clean bill", 702 tweet, CHIP, etc.) enough to facilitate those types of deals.

You're right. I should really separate the House and the Senate.

I know a lot of people are put off with Trump's combative take no prisoners style, but I believe he has been pushing to fulfill his campaign promises. It's the liberal Pubs in the Senate who fail us and the leadership there that lets them get away with it.

  Right.

But the Senate is on a knifes edge as a simple majority. Add in the fruitcakes like McCain, Gramnesty, Collins, Flake,,and assorted other nuts. Then the filibuster on top of that.

A filibuster which could be handled BTW... for advantage.

I just hope the People stay the course and deliver a rebuke to the left/regressive/socialist. A 56-61 Senate with the same House would be my wet dream..... along with Ted Cruz as Senate Majority leader... what a historic team President Trump and Ted in that position would make.

Someone of his attributed Divine and superhuman Dealmaking abilities should have been able to get a deal made with the people in his own party at minimum first dontcha think???

My issue here is in regards to the in-our-face screaming that 'ONLY TRUMP can make the kinds of deals that will reverse and repeal everything the Democrats and Obama have done to ruin the country'.

I've seen no evidence of these supposed 'best-selling' Arts of the Deal' that Trump can allegedly make with anyone, anywhere at anytime, which is why ONLY TRUMP could save the country.  After all - this was one of the MAJOR selling points his fanatical fans kept insisting to us recalcitrant Conservatives who remained unimpressed with Trump during the election cycle.

I think Trump deserves credit for a lot of good things. It's Congress that has failed to deliver on Obamacare and immigration.

Well, I am not permitted to give Trump any credit for anything he does good for the country or that I agree with.

The fact the Republican Party is as useful as wet floating shit paper is another discussion.

My notation is that we were told that Trump will be able to make the best deals and there is absolutely no evidence he has any ability outside of infuriating chosen targets with his thumbs on Twitter.

If Pelosi is running from the illegals, then she may believe the public doesn't support DACA very much.  I guess when decent non-working Americans are searching for their government teat, and it's all gone...it's nice to have a scapegoat to fall back on.

Then they came for the C-Span freaks, And I didn't speak up because I couldn't stop laughing. :patriot:

Specifically..The Senate.

The House did its job last night.  Now it's up to the Senate.

The problem with the Senate, of course, is the filibuster which requires spending bills to get 60 votes.  The Constitution doesn't require that; that's the Senate's peculiar rule to enhance the power of the minority.

If I were McConnell, what I'd do is move heaven and earth to get ALL GOP Senators on board to keep the government running (I understand three GOP Senators plan to vote with the Dems for their own reasons),  so he can say a MAJORITY supports the CR.    Then,  if the Dems force a government shut-down,  let it proceed for a few days and then bring a vote to get rid of the damn filibuster.
