New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo may have just handed Republicans a ready-made campaign ad for his rumored 2020 presidential bid – by declaring Wednesday that America “was never that great.â€
The Democratic star made the seemingly offhand remark as part of his rebuke of President Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan during a New York speech. But the line drew gasps from the crowd.
“We’re not going to make America great again. It was never that great,†Cuomo said, to an awkward blend of gasps and chuckles.
“We have not reached greatness, we will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged, we will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of our population, is gone and every woman’s full potential is realized and unleashed and every woman is making her full contribution,†he said.
But the "never that great" line tore through social media in a New York minute, as journalists and his political rivals seized on the remark.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Marc Molinaro said America, “with its imperfections, has always been great†and called on Cuomo to apologize.
“This governor is so determined to distract voters from his failed policies and corrupted administration that he’s willing to dismiss the steady, determined march of the American people, making and remaking the greatness of America. Mr. Cuomo owes the nation an apology,†he said in a statement. “He should be ashamed of himself."
Cuomo for months has been positioning himself as one of the biggest gubernatorial foes of the Trump White House. He also is facing a primary challenge from the left from actress and activist Cynthia Nixon.

He refers to himself as one. So yes it is.

Too bad the state Republicans insisted on Mr. Invisible as an opponent in the gubernatorial race. Nothing says "we want to lose" like forcing out someone who was willing and able to actually campaign on a contrast between him and Cuomo (John DeFrancisco) for yet another quiet downstate Italian in the mold of Rick Lazio and Rob Astorino. Seriously, the only thing Marc Molinaro has going for him is that he's the major party candidate who isn't Andrew Cuomo... and because he has zero name recognition, he's ensuring that Cuomo's going to win re-election when he doesn't deserve it.
Put up a fight for crying out loud! Larry Sharpe is putting up a better campaign, and he's in a party the state doesn't even recognize (the big-L's, who aren't much better here). This was too good of an opportunity for the GOP to squander with a weak candidate and a split vote.
-
Leftists judge America solely by its imperfections, and every other nation by their often empty promises.
-

I assume it's the 'wop' you refer to, not the dumb because he is clearly dumb and I don't know what 'wop' is...some kind of racial slur, I guess.

Silly me. It is slang for persons of Italian heritage. So, I guess I can't say 'Chink' anymore either. Dangit.

Then can walk it back all they want to. It's on video and audio. They can't just make it go away.

My father's generation called them "DPs" (displaced persons)
"Wops" and "Dagos" are slurs used against immigrants of Italian descent.
...and I doubt back in those days, many residents lived here "with out papers".

Poor lil' Andy -- the Fredo of the Cuomo crime "family"...

America has been the greatest country by any objective standard since the 1940s. By some measures ... well before that, and all made possible by an experiment that few people thought would last.
This comment was devastating for any Presidential ambitions Cuomo had. I hope the other leftists are given a chance to bury themselves also.

He makes his brother Chris look like the brains of the family.

We belong to a private park called the Italian Village. We don’t have a speck of Italian in us; however, I do refer to my three little ones as “jabronies.†They totally answer to it, too. It’s a hoot. Anyway, we joke with other members that in the summertime they use SPF EVOO.

I truly hope I don't hear this man spout this nonsense again. I might have to drive to NY and slap his stupid face.
Why in the he!! would the people in NY elect such an ungrateful creature?

@Emjay
I forget now what the actual letters "WOP" stood for,but an Italian friend told me,and then explain it was what Italian people of a certain era had stamped on their papers at Ellis Island or maybe New Orleans. Maybe both.
Truth to tell it probably had more to do with them being Catholic than anything else,but I have forgotten what the letters were an abbreviation for.
Don't forget that the Protestants and the Catholics spent a couple of hundred years fighting each other for religious domination in Europe,and that the war hadn't been over long when people from Europe started coming to America.
Also don't forget that America was the only nation in the world at that time they didn't have a national religion.
-
Yup. I hope he keeps talking.
@goodwithagun
It won't hurt him at all in NY. NYC pretty much determines who is going to be the state governor,and it is full of voters who are from other countries and hate America.

@Right_in_Virginia
That would surprise me,too.

@jpsb
I am not doubting you are right,but why would Italians be more likely than anyone else to arrive here without papers back in the 1800's and early 1900's?

@goodwithagun
Name a Dim politician in NY with party backing that has ever failed to get elected.
Remember a congresscritter named Adam Clayton Powell Jr? He was a pastor from Harlem,and seemed to get over 90 percent of the vote everytime he ran,despite doing stuff like allow people to take photos of him deep sea fishing in the Carribean with a boatload of white hookers while Congress was in session. I was just a kid,but I remember either Look or Life magazine doing a full photo spread of him partying down,and all it did was gain more votes for him.
Name ONE NY Dim congressman or Senator that wasn't re-elected,or that failed to be elected if they had party backing.

I grew up in an Italian neighborhood on Long Island NY. WOP means without papers. Lots of Italian
immigrants arrived here with no papers. At Ellis Island their new paperwork was stamped WOP.
Between around 1880 and 1924, more than four million Italians immigrated to the United States, half of them between 1900 and 1910 alone

Andrew Cuomo is actually more of a centrist. But, he’s facing a credible challenge from the Left in the democrat primary from Cynthia Nixon, a television actress from Sex and the City with considerable celebrity and exposure.
So this comment that America has never been that great is really just Cuomo trying to “sound Leftistâ€. But he’s too unfamiliar with the subject to understand exactly where the Lefty line is and he just went too far with this ham handed comment.
His problem is complicated by the fact that he really is this stupid.

Is she one of those women who seemed to decide in her 40's that she is a lesbian,and came out in public to get more starring role and more money?

You're familiar with the old quote "It's not whose vote that counts, it's who counts the votes," right?
Well, New York is in the death grip of government-worker labor unions. They control everything about this state, and the decrepit economy that they've ensured through sky-high taxes and onerous regulations forces people to join them or leave town... and a lot of people have left, which is no problem to them, since that means less opposition.
-
Like a lot of people with his political tilt, he seems to want perfection. Or, at least perfection as how he defines it
America is not perfect. But even with it’s imperfections, we’re better off overall than many other parts of the world
-
Why in the he!! would the people in NY elect such an ungrateful creature?
Mario's idiot son, pretty much inherited the job of Governor of New York.
-
I think Cuomo is taking a chapter out of the of Michelle Obama book. She made her comment about about first time she could be proud of her country when they nominated her husband. Fact is, in the Democommie Party, it pays to denigrate our country.
Not only is America a great country, but I will go further to say that the vast majority of the world today has their freedom due only because of the USA. Cuomo is an utter idiot to say what he did. No stepping that foolish comment back!

Sure he gained votes. He was 'getting over on the man'.
