In a classic case of unintended consequences, Democrats suing over a perceived Voting Rights Act violation could result is less Democrats in office.

A voting rights lawsuit that could cost Texas Democrats seats across all levels of government received a hearing Tuesday by the full Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, known as the most conservative federal appellate court in the country.

The Galveston County redistricting case is challenging how the appellate court has previously interpreted the Voting Rights Act, which was passed to protect individual minority groups but has been “twisted” for political advantage.

At issue is whether Section 2 of the law requires the county to create a majority-minority district by grouping a “coalition” of black and Hispanic voters.

Neither blacks nor Hispanics are a large enough group in Galveston County to create a majority district.

The county contends that the Voting Rights Act does not protect coalition districts—which represent political, not racial, alliances—nor does it guarantee that Democrats will be elected.

Courts in other federal circuits do not allow aggregating distinct minority groups to force what are almost always Democrat districts.

“The Voting Rights Act was meant to right wrongs. It wasn’t meant to subsidize political parties with legislative seats. That’s what this case is about—the real meaning of the Voting Rights Act, or, how it has been twisted by coalition districts,” said J. Christian Adams, President and General Counsel of the Public Interest Legal Foundation, representing Galveston County in the case.

A win by Galveston County would be a blow to Texas Democrats.

The case began in 2021 when Galveston County’s Republican-majority commissioners court, headed by County Judge Mark Henry, drew new boundaries for the county’s four commissioner districts following the decennial census.

The plan eliminated the lone Democrat commissioner’s majority-minority precinct, a coalition district of blacks and Hispanics. The commissioner is black and has served on the court since 1999.

Three sets of plaintiffs then sued the county: a group of current and former Democrat officeholders (the Petteway plaintiffs), local chapters of the NAACP and LULAC, and the U.S. Department of Justice. The three federal lawsuits were consolidated into Petteway v. Galveston County.

Following a two-week trial last August, a federal judge in Galveston ruled in favor of the plaintiffs’ claim of vote dilution in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The decision was based on a nearly 40-year-old Fifth Circuit precedent supporting coalition claims.

AOC is no match for Greene.  Both have explosive personalities, but AOC has very liberal and bat crap crazy ideas.  She has also been known to 'fake' actions and spew lies in order to gain attention.  It wouldn't surprise me at all if Greene got AOC so angry that eventually she would lose her cool and it would come to blows -- or AOC would come up with one of her 'fake' ploys and try to blame Greene.

Anyways, Garland will never be held in contempt and even if he is, he'll follow Holder's playbook and just continue on regardless.

White House on Biden’s 9% Inflation Claims: We Had 9% Inflation Soon After He Took Office, The Factors Were There

Ian Hanchett 17 May 2024

On Thursday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Cavuto: Coast to Coast,” White House Council of Economic Advisers Chair Jared Bernstein defended President Joe Biden’s repeated assertions that inflation was 9% by claiming that “the annual growth in core inflation in the second quarter of ’21 was, in fact, about 9%” and that Biden was making the point that “the factors that caused inflation to climb to 9% were in place when he took office.”

Host Neil Cavuto asked, “Jared, why does he keep saying that? You’re his top economic — you’re the head of the Council of Economic Advisers. Do you ever whisper in his ear, Mr. President, just to be technical about it, it wasn’t 9% when you assumed office, it was 1.4%. It got as high as 9% in 2022, you brought it down from that, but it was never, ever, ever 9% when he came into office? So, why does he keep saying it?”

Bernstein responded, “Well, first of all, let me point out that, in that very quote you played, the President talked about how concerned he was for households struggling with prices that he consistently –.”

Cavuto then cut in to ask, “That’s not what I asked you. Why does he keep misrepresenting this?”

Bernstein answered, “He’s making the point that the factors that caused inflation to climb to 9% were in place when he took office.”

Cavuto then cut in to ask, “No, that’s not what he said. He said it was at 9%. It would eventually get to 9% a little over a year after that. But the fact of the matter is it wasn’t 9%. So, if I can’t trust him quoting data in real-time, why should I believe what he’s talking about now?”

The orcs were actually hit worse than "just" two MiGs and a fuel storage facility:

Besides having been hit twice in two nights, Belbek is relatively close to the front line, i.e. a vulnerable "easy" target. That two planes are still there suggests, as is pointed out in the video, that they have been damaged enough to need repair before flying off to less dangerous environs.

James Carville, here’s what you need to know about why Trump is winning
You're a celebrated Democratic strategist, does the word 'un-American' mean anything to you, Mr. Carville?

While some of my more conservative friends don't like it, I have always been a fan of James Carville.

I deeply respect his service to our nation in the U.S. Marine Corps and admire the fact that he got his degree from LSU at night while working during the day.

I enjoy his political analysis because he has walked the walk quite successfully over the years, and I especially like the fact that he had the good sense to marry Mary Matalin, a woman I have crossed paths with politically over the years and consider to be an exceptional strategist.

That is not to say that James can’t wildly miss the mark from time to time or have a liberal prism distort his vision of the truth. As was – in my opinion – recently the case.

Within the body of a video shown on RealClearPolitics and other sites, James lamented the fact that: "Trump’s more ahead than he’s ever been… It’s going the wrong way. It’s not working. Everything we’re throwing is spaghetti at a wall, and none of it is sticking, me included."

Note to James: former President Trump is winning precisely because of what you and the unhinged left are doing to him.

The illicit use of the DOJ, the Deep State, laughable "lawfare" charges brought by unqualified partisan Democrats, raids on his home, and the non-stop airing of his trial by the liberal networks is deeply unnerving millions of American voters who view this as a brazen attempt by the Biden White House and its multiple powerful allies in and out of government to force Biden’s political opponent off the ballot.

Does the word "un-American" mean anything to you, James?

Chaos erupts in hearing as Greene, Ocasio-Cortez clash over ‘fake eyelashes’ jibe at Crockett
by Mychael Schnell - 05/16/24 11:27 PM ET

A House Oversight Committee hearing devolved into chaos Thursday night as Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) clashed after the firebrand Republican accused Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) of wearing “fake eyelashes.”

The comment — which was made during a markup to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress — prompted nearly an hour of disorder in the committee, with lawmakers screaming over one another and hurling insults left and right, leaving Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) struggling to maintain order.

The madness culminated Thursday night with a vote on whether or not to allow Greene to continue speaking during the hearing, which the panel ultimately granted in a 22-20 vote. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) — who has butted heads with Greene in the past — crossed party lines to vote against allowing the Georgia lawmaker to proceed during the hearing. Boebert was sitting two seats away from Greene during the vote.

“I hope you brought your popcorn,” Greene exclaimed at one point during the hearing.

Republicans moved to hold Garland in contempt after the attorney general refused to hand over the audio recording of President Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur, despite already having the transcript of the conversation. Biden claimed executive privilege over the audio recordings.

The vote passed 24-20 along party lines just after 11 p.m. eastern time Thursday night, hours after the House Judiciary Committee did the same. The full House will now vote on holding the attorney general in contempt.

Mayhem broke out during Thursday night’s Oversight hearing when Greene asked if any Democrats on the panel were employing the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing former President Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan. Trump and Republicans have targeted the judge’s daughter over her employment at a progressive digital agency. The Oversight Committee delayed Thursday’s contempt markup from an 11 a.m. start time to 8 p.m. so a number of Republicans who sit on the panel were able to attend Trump’s trial in Manhattan.

“Please tell me what that has to do with Merrick Garland,” Crockett, a first-term lawmaker, asked, later adding, “do you know what we’re here for?”

“I don’t think you know what you’re here for,” Greene responded. “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”

The comment prompted outrage from Democrats, with Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the top Democrat on the committee, saying “that’s beneath even you, Ms. Greene,” and Ocasio-Cortez yelling “that’s disgusting.”

Ocasio-Cortez moved to take down Greene’s words, calling them “absolutely unacceptable.”
