Family's football outing in St. Louis turns tragic as 8-year-old girl shot to death

The girl is the 12th child to be killed by gunfire in St. Louis since April, the local newspaper reports.

An 8-year-old girl was killed and three other people injured in a shooting at a football exhibition involving multiple high schools in St. Louis, Missouri.

Police initially responded to a brawl at the football jamboree at Soldan High School at about 7:20 p.m. Friday night, St. Louis Metropolitan Police said. About 30 minutes later, there was a report of shots fired nearby.

Four victims with gunshot wounds were found in the parking lot of a restaurant near the high school.

They were taken to an area hospital, where one of the victims, 8-year-old girl Jurnee Thompson, was pronounced dead.

A couple of weeks ago I searched for major US cities with the highest murder rates (I was backing-and-forthing with a Prog FB friend about Baltimore). IIRC, St. Louis was #1 (= the worst), and East St. Louis was #3 (Baltimore, IIRC, was #5).

My understanding is that St. Louis has been going downhill for many years, and the Ferguson Effect has simply accelerated that deterioration.

The city of St. Louis, MO, is awful, the city of East St. Louis, IL, is awful, and now St. Louis County, MO (a separate jurisdiction from the city of STL) is becoming more and more awful. Ferguson is in St. Louis County, as a point of reference, and the new county prosecutor expressly states he won't prosecute many offenders (perhaps a matter of skin hue). Flee, flee!

A long, long time ago...my dad decided his fortune was in St. Louis. We only stayed a short time. (thank goodness) It was rugged even then...the 50's I think.
