Trump cancels White House Christmas party for the press
By Howard Kurtz | Fox News
EXCLUSIVE – President Trump has canceled the White House holiday party for the media, making the decades-old tradition a victim of his increasingly contentious relationship with major news organizations.
The annual Christmas-season gathering was a significant perk for those covering the White House, as well as other Washington reporters, anchors and commentators, and New York media executives would regularly fly in for the occasion. At its peak, the invitation-only soirees grew so large that there were two back-to-back events, one for broadcast outlets and one for print organizations.
Journalists who attended the events, which featured a catered buffet of lamb chops, crab claws and elaborate desserts, got to roam the decorated mansion with a spouse or other family member, a friend or a colleague, adding to the invitation's allure.
But the biggest fringe-benefit was the picture-taking sessions, in which the president and first lady would patiently pose with guests and briefly chat with them in front of a Christmas tree, with the White House sending out the photos — copies of which were invariably sent home to mom. This would take a couple of hours, with long lines snaking across the building's first floor. Bill Clinton even posed for pictures with journalists days after he was impeached.

President Trump has cancelled the traditional White House holiday party for members of the press, according to a Fox News report published Thursday.
The White House did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment.
The annual White House party for the media has been a tradition for decades, as members of the press descended on the back-to-back, invitation-only events. There were two separate parties for broadcast outlets and print organizations at one point because the guest list became so long, Fox News noted.
The party's cancellation marks the latest development Trump's ongoing feud with the media. He has also bucked the press by declining to attend the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, a media awards event that had been attended by presidents since former President Nixon

Seems kind of petty IMO.

Seems kind of petty IMO.
Seems decades overdue. Why does the government spend tax dollars on such nonsense?
-
Screw em, they hate him anyway and a Christmas party won't change a thing.
-
You don't pay for a Christmas party for your enemies.

You don't pay for a Christmas party for your enemies.
Only if you plan to eliminate them. :MiniGun:

It's about time.

It would be appear hypocritical at best, or worse obsequious, if he were to throw a party for the press.

And hypocritical for the press to attend. They should be pleased they aren't obligated to go.

CNN boycotted it in 2017. So this year they don't have to send an RSVP ASAP for being MIA at the BFD.

IKR? You can't RSVP for an N/A, though CNN might just to be a PITA.

CNN is so FUBAR that an invite to a VIP event should be kept on the QT to avoid a CF.

Good riddance to the White House media Christmas party
Washington Examiner, Dec 13, 2018, Philip Klein
[...]
The press, during the Trump era, has rediscovered the importance of having an adversarial posture toward those in power. People in high positions and those who work for them are trying to spin, lie, deceive, and manipulate the public through the media, and members of the press should be able to maintain a healthy distance so that they can report dispassionately and fairly.
The Christmas party, however, is a spectacle in which White House reporters are almost transformed into political tourists. It was a nauseating display every year I've lived in Washington, and especially during the Obama era, to see reporters self-importantly posting their shots with Barack and Michelle in front of the Christmas tree. It reminds of me of the entertainment reporters who giddily boast about being on such and such movie set, snapping photos with some celebrity, acting as a fan of somebody they're supposed to be covering.
In the Trump era, members of the media organizations have made a big show of their contempt for this specific president, so it would be kind of absurd to suddenly go to a Christmas party hosted by the Trumps and act like everything is normal.
Good riddance to this obnoxious tradition.
