Rudy Giuliani’s Manhattan Apartment Raided in Federal Investigation

Federal agents executed a search warrant at the New York City apartment of Rudy Giuliani on Wednesday morning to seize electronic devices and collect evidence in connection to an ongoing Department of Justice criminal investigation, according to The New York Times.
Giuliani, former President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, is the subject of a probe related to his activities in Ukraine during the 2020 election cycle.
Federal prosecutors rarely seek approval for search warrants related to legal work that falls under the umbrella of attorney-client privilege.

Federal investigators in Manhattan executed search warrants early Wednesday at the home and office of Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who became President Donald J. Trump’s personal lawyer, stepping up a criminal investigation into Mr. Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine, three people with knowledge of the investigation said.
The investigators seized Mr. Giuliani’s electronic devices and searched his apartment on Madison Avenue and his office on Park Avenue at about 6 a.m., two of the people said.
Executing a search warrant is an extraordinary action for prosecutors to take against a lawyer, let alone a lawyer for a former president. It was a major turning point in the long-running investigation into Mr. Giuliani and a remarkable moment in his long arc as a public figure.

Michael Cohen offered an excited reaction Wednesday to the news that federal prosecutors had executed a search warrant at Rudy Giuliani's apartment.
Cohen, who was once former President Trump's personal lawyer before a serious falling out, wrote on Twitter, “Here we go folks!!!”

Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Deadline” he was “delighted” former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s Manhattan apartment was searched by the FBI.
Federal investigators reportedly seized Giuliani’s electronic devices.
Schiff said, “What’s disturbing to me is, if there’s probable cause to believe there’s evidence of a crime at the Giuliani’s business or home last year and Bill Barr’s Justice Department wouldn’t do anything about it, it’s another indication of politicization at the very top of the Justice Department. We know that other decisions on sentencing, for example, with Roger Stone or even dismissing whole cases against Mike Flynn, were made on the basis of politics by Bill Barr. This appears to be yet another example.”
He continued, “I’m delighted to see that under the new leadership of that department, decisions will once again be made equally under the law. Everyone will be treated the same under the law. No one will be given a pass. No one will be pursued for political reasons. I think Merrick Garland has the exactly right background for that approach. ”
Anchor Nicolle Wallace asked, “Do you have questions of what might have been quashed under Barr in terms of other investigations?”
Schiff said, “Certainly.”

Michael Cohen, formerly a personal lawyer for former President Donald Trump, predicted Thursday on CNN’s “Newsroom” that Rudy Giuliani would do what he did and turn on Trump.
Cohen said, “I told him was that Donald Trump doesn’t care about anyone or anything, that he will be the next one to be thrown under the bus, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen.”
He continued, “What happens is they may be starting the investigation, looking at things like the Ukrainian conversations between himself, Lev Parnas, and others. You may find out Jared Kushner was involved, or Don Junior or a host of other individuals in Trump’s orbit, and what happens then is that the Southern District, they end up expanding the probe.”
Cohen added, “You’re going to start to see a multitude of documents. You may even find out that Rudy was involved with Bill Barr in the remand of me the second time to prison based upon a Donald Trump communication. We have no idea how expansive this investigation is going to ultimately reveal itself because Rudy’s an idiot. That’s the problem. Rudy drinks too much. Rudy behaves in such an erratic manner that who knows what’s on those telephones or what’s on his computers?”

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Wednesday accused federal agents of ignoring copies of Hunter Biden’s computer hard drives when they raided his apartment — and blamed the investigation into his dealings in Ukraine on “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
In a statement released by his lawyer, Giuliani said the FBI “steadfastly declined” to take the hard drives when he “offered them on several occasions.”
“Keep in mind that the agents could not read the physical hard drives without plugging them in, but they took Mr. Giuliani’s word that the hard drives were copies of Hunter Biden’s hard drive and did not contain anything pertaining to Mr. Giuliani,” the statement said.
“Their reliance on Mr. Giuliani’s credibility tells you everything you need to know about this case.”
The raid was reportedly tied to an investigation into whether Giuliani illegally lobbied former President Donald Trump on behalf of officials and oligarchs in Ukraine — where the former mayor went to dig up dirt against then-candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter. ...

The Times appended their correction to a story about the role Giuliani may have played in the 2019 recall of ambassador Marie L. Yovanovitch and whether he received a warning from the FBI about Russian disinformation.
“An earlier version of this article misstated whether Rudolph W. Giuliani received a formal warning from the F.B.I. about Russian disinformation. Mr. Giuliani did not receive such a so-called defensive briefing,” The Times wrote Saturday in a note attached to the piece. ...

Prosecutors in New York do not plan to criminally charge Rudy Giuliani in connection with a probe into his interactions with Ukrainian figures, they revealed in a letter to a judge Monday in what a lawyer for Giuliani declared a “total victory.”
They said they made the decision after a review of evidence resulting from raids on his residence and law office in April 2021. Federal prosecutors were investigating whether Giuliani’s dealings with figures in Ukraine in the run-up to the 2020 election required him to register as a foreign agent.
Prosecutors said a grand jury probe that led to the issuance of warrants that resulted in the seizure of Giuliani’s electronic devices had concluded.
They said that based on information currently available, criminal charges would not be forthcoming.
“In my business, we would call that total victory,” Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello, told The Associated Press. “We appreciate what the US attorney’s has done. We only wish they had done it a lot sooner.”
Sixteen of Giuliani’s devices were seized as part of a federal investigation into his interactions with Ukrainian figures to see whether he violated a law governing lobbying on behalf of foreign countries or entities.
