Yundi Li - Chopin "Fantasie" Impromptu, Op. 66 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvm2ZsRv3C8#)

This is wonderful, IMO.

NOTE:  If you add &emt=18 to the YouTube url link in the top window, and hit 'enter', you'll always hear it in "stereo"  Personally, it seems they just add a little reverb

remarks at YouTube...

Of course no video collection would be complete without the cliche Yundi Li video of him playing Chopin's "Fantasie" Impromptu in C-sharp minor, Op. 66 No. 4 This is one of my favorite pieces.

did you know: Chopin hated this piece? He composed it when he was just 24 and regretted it ever after.

I was always the nerd as the kid.  Loved classical music while everyone else followed whichever trend was the most popular at the time.

Beethoven was a genius..... pure and simple.  I always marvel where artistic genius eminates from..... musical and otherwise.  My husband used to say it flows out the fingertips, you don't think about it, it just happens, can't explain it.

The interesting aspect about Beethoven was that single women were banned from his concerts,
It was believed to be so passionate that it would drive them into a state of uncontrollable lust.

There is a fine line between madness and genius, he was a genius.

There is a fine line between madness and genius, he was a genius.

There's so may shades in between, though.

My best friend as a teenager was...believe it or not....my barber.

There's a connection....so I hope I'm not boring the hell out of you.

He worked in a shop with 4 chairs.  There were enough chairs in the waiting area to seat maybe 10-12 people.  On a Saturday afternoon, you couldn't even find a place to stand....let alone sit.  And two of the barbers were sitting in their own chairs.....watching Gino.  All were waiting for Gino....who was always 2 hours behind.

He did all the news and sports announcers.....all the Buffalo Bills.  Jack Kemp used to go to him.  Until he threw him out of the shop one day.

One day, he saw a woman waiting for a bus with a short, beautiful Vidal Sassoon geometric cut.  Now remember.....he was already 'famous' in the area.

Even though he looked like a very young Michael Landon....and now an older Brad Pitt....and could literally charms your pants off...when he had the scissors is his hand, ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN.

When he found out who had cut her hair, he went to the haircutter and it changed his life.

He immediately began to advertise to cut women's hair.  He went to London and San Fransisco to the Sassoon Academy.  He slowly weeded out all the men customers by raising the prices.  And he's booked at least a month in advance.

I recall back in the 70's he'd have women crying in the chair.  If his 2nd or 3rd attempt to console her didn't work....he'd threaten to put the scissors down and make her leave....half done and wet.  And with little or no tact.

Didn't bother him whatsoever.  Most of them ended up sending him roses, bottles of wine and an apology begging forgiveness.

Back then...his sound system was records.  GOD FORBID should his assistant forget to turn down the volume while selecting certain songs on the album.  It was that simple thing that could completely unhinge him.

He refused to speak to his client once he picked up the scissors.  No small talk....no phone calls.....no interruptions.  He was .....composing?

Summary......he was a genius at his craft....but as charming as he was....you had a better chance of seeing an a$$hole in the shop on any given busy afternoon.

He went through assistants and hired help like no other.  But he loved women and it showed in his work everyday.

Wonder if Beethoven was an bleep to his circle of influence.

Great story, no it did not bore me.  I will only tell you whether a musical genius, artistic genius or other form of genius, they do not like being told what to do or how to do it, so yes.... from what I have read he was capricious like most geniuses.

Vivaldi - Violin Concerto Op.3, No. 12 in E Major, RV 265 (3/3) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBVW2l4212c#)

Exquisite! nice slide show of Venice.

http://www.baroquemusic.org/bqxvivaldi.html (http://www.baroquemusic.org/bqxvivaldi.html)  - bio of "The Red Priest"

excerpt here:

Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice on March 4th, 1678. Though ordained a priest in 1703, according to his own account, within a year of being ordained Vivaldi no longer wished to celebrate mass because of physical complaints ("tightness of the chest") which pointed to angina pectoris, asthmatic bronchitis, or a nervous disorder. It is also possible that Vivaldi was simulating illness - there is a story that he sometimes left the altar in order to quickly jot down a musical idea in the sacristy.... In any event he had become a priest against his own will, perhaps because in his day training for the priesthood was often the only possible way for a poor family to obtain free schooling.

Though he wrote many fine and memorable concertos, such as the Four Seasons and the Opus 3 for example, he also wrote many works which sound like five-finger exercises for students. And this is precisely what they were.

The reputation of baroque Venice as a musical centre was one of the highest in Europe, due largely to its four conservatories of music. Beginning as charitable foundations they developed gradually as seats of musical learning, and by the early 1700s their excellence was unrivalled. This was confirmed by Charles de Brosses, French Magistrate and President of the Parlement de Dijon, who visited Italy in 1739, reporting in his Lettres familières écrites d'Italie and published posthumously in 1799, that "the Ospedali have the best music here. There are four of them, all for illegitimate or orphaned girls whose parents cannot support them. These are brought up at the State's expense and trained exclusively in music. Indeed they sing like angels, play the violin, flute, organ, oboe, cello, bassoon... The performances are entirely their own and each concert is composed of about forty girls."

This is a wonderful 'live' performance...you can see they're having a lot of fun.  How could you not with that melody?

Only critique is that since it's supposed to be "for mandolins".....they should have been wired so that they were more prominent on the audio.

...enjoy...you'll see what I mean.  It's fantastic!

edit 5/1/11 - After less than a year at the monastery, Vivaldi, a priest, got himself a medical...a note for the doctor, which allowed him to skip saying daily Mass.  He said when a run of melody came into his head, he'd have to run into the sanctuary and write it down....it got to be a PIA.  Listening to this arrangement, it's totally understandable.

I don't see images , I see whole movies - high definition on a big screen - in my head :-) And with Rachmaninoff Sonata it was in 3D beofre the format became popular.... For memory purposes I see music score - even where page turns are. I also HEAR sound - and there is a simple muscle memory . All of those - plus knowing a general structure of a piece -combine to make playing by hear easier.Try to work on vsualising the score - 1 time before you fall asleep try to see every measure.

A little different rendition and audio than Yundi Li's back on page 1 of this thread.

But better visual of keyboard.

Did you ever watch the movie on his life?  He was a jerk for certain, but then most highly artistic people are not easy to understand or to live with, they can put a whole new spin in tempermental.

I respect creativity in people and give them wide latitude when it comes to interacting socially.  Many are social misfits.

Reminds me of why I was so angry when that homosexual violinist from Rutgers jumped off the NYC bridge after his roommates filmed him having a tryst.

I saw Phantom both in LA and NYC, would see it again in a heartbeat.  I like to think Sarah Brightman was a muse to Andrew Lloyd Webber as IMHO he did some of his best work while married to her, and who wouldn't write for that amazing voice.  I have a CD of her work (Michael Crawford, too) as you know I love Lake Powell.  When you are up there amoung those amazing prehistoric canyons and the CD cranked up playing this music with it reverberating off the canyon walls it gives you goosebumps.

Joshua Bell playing Ave Maria. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvlTuBnpKpc#)

recent comment at YouTube:

How can somebody dislike this? Seriously. The melody of this song just... It vibrates inside of your soul.
It's like feathers falling from the Heavens, landing safely on a soft, velvet pillow, the world being reborn.
Perfect. Soft. The singers nowadays are nowhere as good as the sound of a violin playing this beautiful song.
So, allow me to ask, why dislike? Why not enjoy, the four beautiful minutes of your life,
for you may never hear something so beautiful again. Ave Maria is truly beautiful.

To see the innocents of a child is like looking into the face of Angels - Children a gift to have and hold - Love them through out your whole life - Before you know it they will be ready to leave home .Now while your children are young take a moment and look at all the little things you may miss - For our children are a gift from god and time goes quickly by - Before you tuck them into bed don't forget to say- I Love You-Thankyou - From Joy 10*************

Some kids are amazing -- musically.

My nephew is a professional drummer, he also teaches.  This week one of his new students is this little girl -- cutest thing ever and he said she is amazing, you would think she has been playing drums her entire life she is taking to it like a fish to water......  and her little red drums are so cute!!!!  He gets a lot of pleasure out of teaching children to play, they are sponges.

Mozart died at 1 a.m. on 5 December 1791 at the age of 35.

The New Grove gives a matter-of-fact description of his funeral:

Mozart was buried in a common grave, in accordance with contemporary Viennese custom, at the St. Marx Cemetery outside the city on 7 December. If, as later reports say, no mourners attended, that too is consistent with Viennese burial customs at the time; later Jahn (1856) wrote that Salieri, Süssmayr, van Swieten and two other musicians were present. The tale of a storm and snow is false; the day was calm and mild.[66]

Now this is from Wiki.....so it's the latest version.

The Ghost of my Brother, Lost.    .....spadekiller video

This is the most amazing piece of music and video I've heard/seen in a long time.

Yo-Yo Ma is a treasure.

The  Ghost of My Brother Lost

From the tree the last apple
Fell to earth alone
Spoiled by summer’s touch
Yellow scared, burned with rust

Wasting in the barley grass
In the froth of golden hops
Hides a better soul,
The ghost of my brother lost.

How loved he was!
Will he ever know?
For envy casts
Fond memories off…

Into stormy seas green with greed
Like old whiskey bottles bobbing blind.

In the shadows of his father’s tomb
He pillaged his brother’s birthright share

And now upon stiffened knees
He stands aloft
A barren tree in a field of
Forgotten love.

Julia Fischer - Winter- movement.1°Allegro.(HD) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k06iDweIUXw#ws)

Julia Fischer, born in Munich, Germany, is of German-Slovakian parentage. Her mother, Viera Fischer (née Krenková), came from the German minority in Slovakia and immigrated from Košice, Slovakia to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1972. Her father, Frank-Michael Fischer, a mathematician who was born in East Germany, moved in the same year from Eastern Saxony to West Germany.

Fischer began her studies before her fourth birthday, when she received her first violin lesson from Helge Thelen; a few months later she started studying the piano with her mother, Viera Fischer. Fischer said, "my mother's a pianist and I wanted to play the piano as well, but as my elder brother also played the piano, she thought it would be nice to have another instrument in the family. I agreed to try out the violin and stayed with it."[2] She began her formal violin education at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg, under the tutelage of Lydia Dubrowskaya. At the age of nine Julia Fischer was admitted to the Munich Academy of Music, where she continues to work with Ana Chumachenco.

As a teenager she was inspired mostly by Glenn Gould and by Evgeny Kissin and Maxim Vengerov

Vivaldi- Ottone in villa, RV 719: L'ombre l'aure, e ancora il rio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qCFcb3_6Q8#)

Aria: L'ombre l'aure, e ancora il rio

Ottone in villa (Ottone in the city) was the first opera by Antonio Vivaldi. Its catalogue number is RV 729. Ottone, classified as an Italian opera, was written in 1713. It was commissioned by the governor of Vicenza, Antonio Francesco Farsetti. The libretto was written by Domenico Lalli, pseudonym of Sebastiano Biancardi. The opera was premiered at the theater of the Garzerie, in Vicenza, on 17 May 1713.

Sypnosis:

The Holy Roman Emperor Ottone is in love with Cleonilla, who can't resist flirting with two courtesans, Ostilio and Caio. Ostilio is in reality a woman, Tullia, who disguised herself because she's in love with Caio. She plans to kill Cleonilla out of jealousy, but she first tries to dissuade her from her relation with Caio. Caio sees the meeting and misinterpret it as a romantic encounter. He warns Ottone, who commands him to kill Ostilio. Before he can execute the order, Ostilio reveals himself to be Tullia. Cleonilla claims to have always known it, to conciliate Ottone. He believes her and the opera closes with the marriage of Tullia and Caio.

Premiere Cast, May 17, 1713

Roles-
Cleonilla (soprano): Maria Giusti "La Romana"
Ottone (contralto) : Diana Vico
Caio Silio (soprano) : Bartolomeo Bartoli
Decio (tenor) : Gaetano Mozzi
Tullia (soprano) : Margherita Fazzoli

***All the singers listed directly above were the ones in the premiere cast.

Vivaldi: Concerto pour 4 violons en si mineur - Pham/Gjezi/Darmon/Tudorache - OCNE/Krauze (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO6CqW3imbo#ws)

Vivaldi, who was a priest faked a health problem so he could be excused from saying daily Mass.

He became so disconnected when he would suddenly feel, see, smell a melody, that he had to run into the Vestibule to write it down.

When you listen to the 3rd movement that starts at 6:10, it's easy to understand.

Pure genius.

Speaking of simplicity.  I found this piece on a compilation album called Simply Summer.

Picture lounging on a soft sand beach.  Before you, a light blue cloudless sky painted above a deep blue ocean. Small white triangles dot the heaving water in the distance.  A warm breeze embraces you as you turn and glance at your lover - her hair swirling in the wind, her lips red and inviting.  The sound of seagulls circle above and mix with the crashing waves that retreat into foamy stillness.  You draw her near, then caress her lips with a soft, lingering kiss.

Just a gratuitous 'bump'....with one of the finest pieces of string music on the planet.

Vivaldi was most likely a 'radical' in his day....in a sense that the music he created and the masks worn were not the acceptable norms of the day.

In a sense he was like any superstar idol today.....given tremendous latitude in behavior and expression....and morals.

While the world is starting to burn.....thought I'd bump this powerful Albinoni's rendition of Adagio in G Minor

Includes a beautiful slide show too!

NOTE: read the Cellist of Sarajevo its based on a true story of during the war in Serbia a man would walk out into the street and play this song on the cello every day each day for the amount of people who were killed in a mortar shelling this is the song he plays.

Truly beautiful and soothing.  Hope you find the time to enjoy it.

I prefer Chopin

Chopin: Polonaise No.6 in A flat, Op.53 -"Heroic" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQzkWw2ci8Q#)

I love Beethoven, but I'm more of a Chopin guy (I especially like his first Ballade), with Brahms and Rachmaninoff tied for number 2 in my book.

BTW, Helene Grimaud did a surprisingly good performance of Ballade No.1 when she was only about 17 years old (see youtube).

Female pianists, BTW, are surging in our day. (Check out Valentina Lisitsa, probably the world's foremost Rachmaninoff pianist at this time.  She has a big following on Youtube, with a meteoric rise in the concert world after she made a self-funded CD with the London Symphony.  Her videotaped recording session of the 18th Variation of Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini is especially nice.)

Serious people absorb serious music.
A suggestion for those newly acquainted.
Listen to the composers of the Baroque!!!
As o/s as Ludwig was; the rhythm and harmony
of Franz Jozef Haydn is unsurpassed.
