What state buys the most guns?
Posted By Mike Piccione On 11:08 AM 01/03/2013 @ 11:08 AM In Gun Laws & Legislation,Guns and Gear,Uncategorized | No Comments
If we use the National Instant Criminal Background Check System , or NICS, as a proxy for gun sales we see that Kentucky is the runaway leader in gun sales for 2012.
Four states exceeded one million Federal Bureau of Investigation NICS checks; Kentucky, Texas, California and Illinois. Kentucky is the only state to exceed two million background checks.
Background checks are only a proxy measure for gun sales. A buyer may purchase more than one gun through a gun dealer, depending on the local laws, once the background check comes back authorizing the purchase.
The list of states and their 2012 total NICS background checks is compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Interesting data. It would be useful to also have population numbers so one can compute a per-capita number of checks. It would also be handy to have a break-down by county - particularly in states that are gun-hating states - because my guess would be that a lot of especially liberal counties will also show a high number of NIC checks.

Whoo Hoo Kentucky!!!

As a Kentuckian, I have to say that I am surprised - and impressed! My husband and I passed a Concealed Carry Weapon Permit class a few weeks ago, and our instructor told us that Kentucky is one of the most liberal states in terms of gun ownership.

Only speaking for myself, but the reason we're getting our permits and buying more guns -
# 1 - is because we CAN!
#2 - is because we're seeing crime all around us going UP and it's 99% because of drugs.
-
Proud to be a West-by-gosh-Virginian. First time we've been in the top half of any positive rankings, let alone the top three!
