AP fact check dings Democrats for false coronavirus claims

The Associated Press is calling out two leading Democratic presidential candidates for what the outlet says were inaccurate comments about the government's ability to address diseases like the coronavirus.
Former Vice President Joe Biden and former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg were "both wrong" to say critical health agencies faced funding cuts. While discussing the coronavirus during Tuesday's debate, those candidates blamed President Trump for restricting resources for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH).
“There’s nobody here to figure out what the hell we should be doing. And he’s defunded — he’s defunded Centers for Disease Control, CDC, so we don’t have the organization we need. This is a very serious thing," Bloomberg said.
Biden similarly indicated Trump reversed the Obama-Biden administration's budget increases to those agencies.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential contenders are describing the federal infectious-disease bureaucracy as rudderless and ill-prepared for the coronavirus threat because of budget cuts and ham-handed leadership by President Donald Trump. That’s a distorted picture. For starters, Trump hasn’t succeeded in cutting the budget.
He’s proposed cuts but Congress ignored him and increased financing instead. The National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aren’t suffering from budget cuts that never took effect.

Some public health experts say a bigger concern than White House budgets is the steady erosion of a CDC grant program for state and local public health emergency preparedness — the front lines in detecting and battling new disease. But that decline was set in motion by a congressional budget measure that predates Trump.

“The CDC’s response has been excellent, as it has been in the past,†said John Auerbach, president of the nonpartisan Trust for America’s Health, which works with government at all levels to improve the nation’s response to high-risk health crises. Some Democrats have charged that Trump decimated the nation’s public health leadership, but Auerbach said CDC’s top scientific ranks have remained stable during the past three years.

Sort of. My wife was babysitting for some people one night. They came home from the bar, arguing. He sat down on the couch. She came out of the kitchen with one and beaned him in the back of the head. Knocked him cold. Then, nice as can be, paid my wife.

They wanted Trump to propose a $$ number so they could outbid him, saying, "$#B is not enough!" Meanwhile 2 or 3 companies already have vaccines entering testing (effectiveness and safety).

Laura Ingraham addressed the "biggest lies" told by critics of President Trump and his administration over the coronavirus outbreak Thursday, starting with the accusation that Vice President Mike Pence isn't "qualified" to manage the coronavirus task force.
"Now, these attacks are so pathetic, they're almost not worth dignifying with a response. They really just hate the fact that Mike Pence is pro-life, that he doesn't believe in enabling drug users," Ingraham said on "The Ingraham Angle" responding to critics of Pence. "Basically, that he's not a liberal because all those liberal governors are doing such a great job with their states crisis."

President Trump has created a new task force to lead the government's response to the fast-spreading coronavirus, the White House announced Wednesday.
Led by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and coordinated through the National Security Council, the task force is made up of subject matter experts from across the federal government and has been meeting daily since Monday. Members of the 12-member group include National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield, and the National Institutes of Health's Dr. Anthony Fauci.

More than 1,200 people have been scrutinized since U.S. health officials began screening passengers at John F. Kennedy, Los Angeles and San Francisco international airports last week. No one has been found to have the virus or been hospitalized through the screenings.
