New Bill Will Make it Illegal for Citizens to Pump Their Own Gas — To Keep You ‘Safe’
By Government Slaves on 02/17/2020

In the land of the free, there are still lawmakers who push for the most ridiculous laws despite there being no benefit to the citizens whatsoever. In fact, a proposed Bill in Illinois will actually hurt citizens and likely lead to fines or other punishment if they simply try to pump their own gas. Seriously.

Relocate To Panama: Emigrate While You Still Can!

Rep. Camille Lilly (D–Oak Park) introduced the legislation earlier this month. It is nothing short of the full force of the nanny state coming to fruition.

“No gas may be pumped at a gas station in this State unless it is pumped by a gas station attendant employed at the gas station,” reads the Gas Station Attendant Act.

There is only one state left in the nation that has such a law, and it's New Jersey.

New Bill Will Make it Illegal for Citizens to Pump Their Own Gas — To Keep You ‘Safe’

Did a little rough math.....

Hypothetical 8 pump station...   8 (6 per day taking account days off) attendants.....    16 hours of operation per day......  2 shifts per day....3 sales per hour per pump.

8 employees @ $15/hour = 2080 hours x 8 X $15/hr = $249,600 of addtional station overhead.  (And btw this does not include employee overhead like medical, social security, workman's comp, etc.)

Gas sold = 8 pumps  X 3 sales/hr. avg. X 4060 hrs. x 15 gal/sale=  1,461,600 gallons.

$249,600 divided by 1,461,000 gallons = 17.08 cents per gallon addtional cost to consumer. (and btw, likely more near 20 cents per gallon taking account employee benefits)

Total bullshit proposal.  I hate f'n liberals.

Oregon only allows self-serve gas in counties with populations under 40K.

I've never started a fire while pumping my own gas - at my Dad's ranch back in the 70s and 80s or at gas stations - and the only fire I've ever seen at a gas station was an engine fire in a car. Maybe I'm insufficiently moronic, but "safety"? B-freaking-S!

Typical idiot left mentality.   Mandate to the iittle people and give them "no choice"... and then lie to them about the reason (safety?).

I think full service stations are nice for folks like my mom (the elderly) who never learned how to pump their own gas and were probably afraid to try.   But to mandate one way or another?  Sheer lunacy.   Democrat lunacy.

This is yet another example of why most thinking people loathe "Government".   Government, run by these moronic leftists, over-thinking everything and always creating more ways in which Government can rule over every aspect of our lives.

Well, I do consider some should not be pumping their own gas.

Just last month I had to yell at a woman who was about to drive off after leaving the nozzle in her gas tank.

Then the other day I accosted an idiot who was pumping gas with a lit cigarette in his lips hovering over the gas tank opening.

I told him if he wants to kill himself, could he please wait until I left the premises.

Will they check the air in your tires? Check your oil level and clean your windshield like the gas station attendants of the old days?

I do full service at the local Conoco - and yeah, they do... It's good I think to get someone else's eyeballs under the hood on a regular basis, and that has saved me a couple times. I let em run it up the rack once a year too, for an oil and lube, and a general look-see...

Worth it to me. And way cheaper than a mechanic.

Interesting. I can't remember ever having an attendant even pump gas for me. Years ago, around here there were some full service stations, but they also had self service pumps. That's what I used. My dad never did any car maintenance so I had to learn on my own. About the only time I've had a mechanic touch one of my cars was for new tires or automatic transmission repair.

I can remember that far back.  A service well provided and needed at the time, considering 10,000 miles on tires, and 50,000 miles on an engine was a good run back in the day.

Now?  I am not really that comfortable having a minimum  wage millenial gas station attendant messing with my tires or checking under my hood.

Name ONE incident of this happening. I smoked while pumping gas from the time I was maybe 14,to the time I quit smoking, when I was in my 50's. So did pretty much everyone else, and I am not aware of even ONE gas tank explosion because of this.

I worked my entire career in the oil and gas industry which has strict safety standards prohibiting cigarettes due to the volatile nature of what is being handled.

Common sense.

Suggest you google it to find incidents.

Was Safety Health and Environmental Manager at a Petrochemical Plant.  Common sense, yeah, but do you realize that cell phone and general static electricty pose even a larger risk?  Watch how many people are on their phones while pumping.....

The arc surrounding and electrical charge is significantly larger than the flame vector from a cigarette.  Thus more contact with the volatile organic vapors

The risk is also much lower if you live and gas up in an Ozone non-attainment area that has pumps with vapor controls.

Yes,and you were working around MUCH larger volumes of explosive vapors.

Name ONE incident of someone smoking while standing along side their car filling it up with gas at a gas station.

After viewing it several times,it looks to me like he used a cigarette lighter to light a fuse going to his gas tank. At no time did I see a cigarette.

Quote
Fire investigators regularly evaluate available fuels and potential ignition sources to determine the cause of a fire. This work examined the propensity of lit cigarettes to ignite gasoline vapors, expanding on previous work to include a large number of trials and a wide range of test conditions. Experiments were conducted exposing lit cigarettes, both at idle and under draw, to gasoline vapors in various configurations including pools/pans of gasoline, gasoline on textile substrates (clothing), and sprays of gasoline. Five major brands of commercially-manufactured tobacco cigarettes were tested. The experiments conducted for this study consisted of 70 distinct tests involving a total of 723 cigarettes and over 4,500 instances of exposure of a lit cigarette to ignitable concentrations of gasoline vapor in air. There were no instances of the ignition of gasoline vapors from the exposure of those vapors to a lit tobacco cigarette during any of the experiments.

It's even less likely in the now-a-go-go days, with pumps equipped to capture the fumes.  It's an air pollution control.

True, but whenever I'm down there, the attendant is usually a surly, bearded Pakistani guy who takes three to five minutes to notice that you're waiting at the pump.

Yep. Some of those gas jockeys ain't too smart. Back in the 73 or 79? oil crisis I drove past the Gas Mart one weekend and there was a line about a block long waiting to get gas. I thought it was a mite odd seeing a gas station selling gas on the weekend. Turns out when they closed up for the weekend they neglected to power down the pumps. When they opened up Monday they discovered their tanks were MT.

Some were, some were not. I did the full service shtick when I was a college student, for cash under the table, as a second job during the summer. When the weather on the mountain was too bad to do road construction, I was at the station.

That's right... I don't remember ever using a mechanic - If I did it was unusual. I fix my own, no matter what, including engines, transmissions, diffs... Full ground-up restorations, including body and paint. The only thing I DON'T do is upholstery.

That's why I said it was nice to have a different set of eyes on em from time to time. Because most the time, it's just me.
