High-Level Eruption at Taal Volcano, Philippines — Ash fired 55,000 ft (16.8 km) and into the Stratosphere — Direct Cooling Effect
A high-level stratospheric eruption has just been recorded at Taal Volcano, the Philippines today, January 12, 2019 — the first eruption of any sort since 1977 (solar minimum of weak solar cycle 20).
A thick column of volcanic ash has been fired to an altitude of 55,000 ft (16.8 km) above sea level, according to data released by the Tokyo Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC).
Particulates ejected to altitudes above 32,800 feet (10 km) –and into the stratosphere– often linger, where they have a direct cooling effect on the planet.

This has become a real big deal, evacuations, 8000 stated below in the BBC article, I've seen some higher numbers... I've seen these photos of the eruption with lightning in the smoke. Big ash falls (like raining ash).
Maybe not the best of maps but here is where this volcano is and it is in the province of Batangas, so per this, not far from Manila:

Taal volcano: Lava spews as 'hazardous eruption' feared
A volcano in the Philippines has begun spewing lava, as authorities warn that a "hazardous eruption" is possible "within hours or days".
In the early hours of Monday, a weak flow of lava began seeping out of Taal volcano - located some 70km (45 miles) south of the capital Manila.
It comes after it emitted a huge plume of ash, triggering the mass evacuation of 8,000 people from the area.

3 volcanoes have erupted in the last 24 hours I heard, Popo in Mexico, this one in the Philippines and somewhere else.... lots of info out their on wearing these masks for safety. This volcano has a history of activity and also, of having been deadly.

Taal Volcano erupted on Sunday afternoon, causing multiple earthquakes, lava fountains and a huge lightning-flecked cloud.
More than 23,000 people have been evacuated already – that number could eventually reach 200,000. The government has set aside US$50 million in emergency funding.
Clouds of ash were blown about 65km north to Manila, the capital the Philippines. Masks sold out quickly after residents were advised to wear them if they had to go out. Some wore handkerchiefs across their faces as they breathed air tainted by the smell of sulphur. Streets that would normally be snarled with some of the world’s worst traffic were largely empty in the city of 13 million people.

It "looks" to me as if they are fairly well-prepared for this.
