Ruh Roh. At least we can count on the petulant child in the White House to do exactly the wrong thingYep...
If I recall correctly, The Turkish military was a moderate stabilizing factor in Turkey like the Egyptian Military was in Egypt.
They couldn't really be much worse than Edrogan.

If military does take over....White House will be real mad. I mean real mad. erdegon is obies bff. They just declared - and apparently it's been confirmed on the ground - that they are in charge now. I have no idea where Edrdogan is, but you're right, Bambi the Islamist won't be happy. I read that US jets are overflying the city, FWIW.

There is a coup attempt in NATO country. Meanwhile, an underwear model will be addressing the Republican convention
I think the confusion is Turkey's Air Force uses US made F-16s, as well as most other planes in their Air Force they purchase from either us or the UK.

Erdoğan calls on citizens to streets, airports to resist against coup attemptMore: http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/erdogan-calls-on-citizens-to-streets-airports-to-resist-against-coup-attemp.aspx?pageID=238&nID=101669&NewsCatID=341
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in a phone interview on broadcaster CNNTürk that a "minority group" in the military has attempted a coup.
Erdoğan said the parallel state, referring to the followers of the U.S.-based scholar Fethullah Gülen, has promoted the attempt.
"We will not leave the ground to them," he said, vowing to end the "occupation" by the group, called on nation to unite at squares and airports. Erdoğen said he would also be on the streets.
The move is not as part of the chain of command.
Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said earlier that Turkey is facing an uprising attempt from inside the army, with the state-run Anadolu Agency reporting that Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar is being kept as a hostage with a group. Erdoğan neither confirmed nor denied the information, telling that there was an "obscure atmosphere" of information.
Edrogan saying its a coup attempt by islamists but I'm not buying it.
“Ottomans [Muslims] Were The First to Reach The Moon,” says Turkish President
http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/ottomans-were-the-first-to-reach-the-moon-says-turkish-president/ (http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/ottomans-were-the-first-to-reach-the-moon-says-turkish-president/)
Mr. Erdogan claimed that Muslim explorers reached the Moon more than 300 years before the beginning of the Apollo program, vowing to build a mosque “in the crater” where they landed.
“It is alleged that the first man to walk on the moon was Neil Armstrong in 1969,” Erdogan said. “In fact, Muslim space explorers reached our satellite 334 years before that, in 1635. Everyone knows the story of the famous aviator, Lagari Hasan Celebi, the “Ottoman Rocket Man”, who made the first successful manned rocket flight in 1633. What you might not know, is that he attempted to reach the moon, two years later, and could very well have succeeded!”
The Turkish President Erdogan continued after hearing snickers and whispers from the audience...
“Why do you not believe it? Because you’ve never believed that a Muslim can do such a thing, ...” “This claim is not new. A number of academics in Turkey and in the rest of the world have made this claim, and I believe they are right. NASA may have destroyed most of the physical evidence of the Ottoman’s success during the Apollo 11 mission, but we’ll try to find any evidence that might have escaped the cover up.”

They've always been more secular had a really good working relationship with the U.S. military.
Erdogan has been systematically purging those generals and replacing them with Sharia types.
Sounds like the military decided to put a stop to Erdogan's attempt to play footsie with ISIS.

The Gülen movement is a transnational religious and social movement led by Turkish Islamic scholar and preacher Fethullah Gülen. The movement has no official name but it is usually referred to as Hizmet ("the Service") by its followers and as Cemaat ("the Community/Assembly") by the broader public in Turkey.
Turkey had 2 coups in the 90s alone.
Thanks. Any others?

A classic model for a stable government in the middle east.
If this really is a takeover by moderate Muslims, you can be sure that Obama is already trying to find a way to stop them. It is clear to anyone with eyes to see that Obama supports and defends radical Muslim theocratic dictatorships as is enforced in Iran, and does not like moderate more Western regimes like in Egypt and Israel.
Obama does not support rule by Moderate Muslims and he certainly does not want any kind of 'rule by the people'. He is going to try to stop this popular movement and to put his Muslim Brotherhood in control somehow.

It sure is, even if they want to pretend to be more European than middle east
How helpful. not.

Lots of propaganda flying now.
Going to be a while before we really know what's actually going on.
ANKARA, Turkey — The Latest on what appears to be an attempted military coup in Turkey (all times local):
2:00 a.m.
State-run Anadolu Agency says Turkish Air Force planes are flying above Ankara to strike at helicopters that are being used by those attempting the coup.
Private NTV television reported that F-16 jets have brought down a Sikorsky helicopter, but didn't provide any details.
NTV also showed what it said were images from a police station in Istanbul, showing military officers allegedly detained by police.
Meanwhile, the commander of Turkey's military special forces, Gen. Zekai Aksakalli, said "those who are attempting a coup will not succeed."
He told NTV television by telephone: "Our people should know that we will overcome this... We are in control of the situation."

We encourage U.S. citizens to shelter in place and do not go to the U.S. Embassy or Consulates at this time.
It makes one wonder where the Kurds fit in this; they are probably for the coup I'd say. It sounds like they are oppressed.
Additionally, Turkish government officials report that a government F-16 has shot down a helicopter used by the military coup plotters. Ankara blames the coup attempt on Gulenists and says that it is a minority of the military who are behind this.
Uh, US is involved via NaTO.

Very pro-muzzy.
So who should I be cheering for in that helicopter footage?

Parliament hit by 2 bombs; I'd heard that per Turkish news and now, on fox.
One has to remember, the govt. of course, will say the coup is failing. Good luck to the Army.
Hate to admit this but if the coup leaders wanted to get on the side of the people they seem to have failed.
was Parliament even in session or was this fake....
Situation largely under control after coup attempt: Turkish PM
Situation largely under control after Turkey coup attempt by a group of soldiers, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has said.
The press secretary of Turkish intel agency MİT also said the situation was “back to normal” after the attempt that emerged in key state and military buildings in both Istanbul and the capital city of Ankara.
“The coup has been fired back,” Nuh Yılmaz said.
The state-run broadcaster, TRT, which was taken over by the coup plotters, was retaken by the security forces.
The plotters, who named themselves the “Peace in the Country Council,” had forced a TRT speaker to read a declaration, claiming to take the power in the country.
However, unrest continued in a few spots, including the Boshporus Bridge, which was closed by the plotters.
The coup attempters hit by bomb Turkish parliament, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency said.
Deputies in parliament also confirmed an explosion.

State-run media is reporting that a former legal advisor to the General Staff, which presides over the military, was behind the coup attempt.
Anadulo news agency named Col. Muharrem Kose, who was recently sacked, as the coup's "mastermind".
At least three other co-conspirators are believed to be complicit in the plot, the agency added.

BREAKING: General who helped orchestrate Turkey coup attempt has been killed

The failure of this coup is a crying shame. This will embolden Islamicists across the entire Middle East.
Or... maybe it's not...
Maybe the Islamicists need to be emboldened so that we can force the inevitable confrontation that is coming. Maybe this will allow them to rise just enough to be pushed HARD from their pedestal by Western powers.
God knows.

There have been Turkish coups before, and they were almost always to enforce Ataturk's notion of secular democracy. In the present circumstance, with Erdogan threatening Ataturks' legacy, a coup in Turkey would probably be a good thing.
Unfortunately, what seems to have actually happened -- a failed coup -- is definitely a very bad thing. It will allow a cull of the secularists in the Turkish army and put Erdogan's version of Islamism even more firmly in control.
Seeing reports that at least some of the soldiers were beheaded so the tipping point may come sooner rather than later.
After all, millions of Turks oppose islamist rule and Edrogan is prodding a very tender spot.
The shameful part is always that the "millions of muslims who oppose" are almost always dead silent when they are needed the most.

I am starting to think Erdogan did a fake coup as a pretext
My best guess is this another domino falling toward the inevitable world wide Holy War that will happen within the next 100 years.
My best guess is that Obama is assessing how to make the same changes in this country.
He would delight in rounding up all those conservatives he was unable to get to by the IRS and suspend their liberties.
