Trump tried to interfere in probe of Turkish-Iranian gold trader – report
U.S. President Donald Trump sought to interfere in a legal case against a gold trader accused of breaching sanctions on Iran, urging then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to persuade the Justice Department to drop the matter, Bloomberg reported.
Turkish-Iranian gold trader Reza Zarrab, accused of using fictitious trades worth billions of dollars to circumvent U.S. sanctions on Iran, was a client of Rudi Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer. Bloomberg cited three people familiar with a 2017 meeting at the Oval Office at which Trump made the request to Tillerson.
Zarrab, who enjoyed close ties to top Turkish politicians and bankers, later turned state-witness in a trial on the same charges as Mehmet Hakan Atilla, a senior banker at Turkey’s state-run Halkbank. The trial, which ended in Atilla’s conviction, sparked outrage among senior Turkish figures including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and a diplomatic crisis with Washington.
