Title: Your Feel Good Veterans Day Story of 2020
Post by: txradioguy on November 12, 2020, 01:51:09 am
(Sept. 27, 2004) -- Seven-year-old Phillip Shriver has a new guardian angel -- a little bear angel with red, white and blue wings, wearing a helmet.

Shriver who has a life threatening illness, leukemia, received the memento during his visit to Fort Riley Sept. 20, from Command Sgt. Maj. James Savitski, 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery command sergeant major.

Shriver was here living his dream of being a Soldier -- if only for a day. His wish was granted by Fort Riley and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Kansas.

I was with Phil all day that day as one of his escorts at Ft. Riley.  I bonded with him because he was the same age as my son.

I just want you guys to know that young Phillip Shriver is now SPC Phil Shriver 13M, U.S. Army.   He’s also an Afghan combat vet.

He kicked cancer in the balls and then gave it a bitchslap across the face for good measure.

Phil got his wish...he’s a soldier.

The one thing Phil didn’t have when he visited Ft Riley in 2004 was a black beret to complete his uniform.  I called my wife and had her bring one of my berets from the house to give to him.

Phil sent me a picture from Veterans Day a couple years ago...he was standing with his mom in his Class A’s...wearing the beret I’d given him in 2004.

@txradioguy

GREAT news! Thank you for reporting it,as well as reporting the update.

I know that you,like me,consider being a soldier in the US Army to be a mighty fine thing to be,and this update really puts some joy in my heart.

Good for you,good for Phil!

BTW,is there even a remote chance he is in any way related to SFC Jerry Shriver,USA SF,who went MIA in Cambodia in 1969 or so? I sure hope so.

@Bigun
At the risk of sounding like I am degrading the important of a Silver Star,which I am NOT,WTH was the fool that only put him in for a SS?

It takes a special kind of courage and determination to repeatedly go charging into a freaking fire,I don't care who you are,and this man did it 3 times to try to save his fellow soldiers.

You don't even have to have ever been in the military to understand the courage it takes to run back into a fire to rescue others when you have no protective gear and have already been burnt yourself. How this man kept his wits together and didn't just go into shock will forever be a mystery to me.

As a former NCO myself,I am insulted that this happened,and I had never even heard of the man until today.
