As I type these words, Californians are under a mandatory “stay at home†edict issued by the Patrick Bateman cosplayer in our statehouse. Any Californian caught leaving his, her, its, or zir home for “nonessential†reasons is subject to fine or imprisonment.
Yes, the state that removed criminal penalties for knowingly giving someone AIDS has imposed criminal penalties on anyone who might inadvertently spread Wuhanvirus. Yes, the open-borders governor who claims he has no moral authority to tell Mexicans to stay out has ordered all Californians to stay in.
And yes, the state that’s rapidly decriminalizing property crimes has criminalized going outdoors. A Californian who decides to take a walk in a park risks more severe penalties than an illegal alien who steals a TV. Cities like San Francisco have reclassified property crimes as non-arrest offenses (citation only, as if for jaywalking), and California as a whole has deemed theft of items valued at less than $950 a non-arrest offense (as a result, such thefts are rarely pursued by police). On the other hand, any violation of Gavin Newsom’s “stay at home†edict is “punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or by imprisonment for no more than six months†(L.A.’s separate “stay at home†order carries the same penalties).

What a pack of ignorance, stereotypes, and distortion!
1. Ignorance - California is far from the only state in "shelter-in-place" shutdown. If David Cole is ignorant of that, maybe he should read the news once in a while.
2. Stereotypes - California, contrary to the title, is not any closer to "Third World" than any other state in the US, and may be farther from that status than some.
3. Distortion - "Essential" is defined very broadly. It includes shopping for food and other consumables. It includes shopping at hardware stores. Which means store employees and delivery people are "essential". It includes hospital and doctor visits, which necessarily means a wide array of medical and support staff are "essential". It includes buying take-out food from restaurants, and therefore some of the restaurant workers. It includes people essential to many businesses' operations, so as businesses decide who are essential, there are production and support people still going to work (e.g. me and many in my work group).
I realize California-Bashing is a beloved sport for many conservatives, but could lovers of that "sport" at least post articles less stupid than the article in this thread's OP? Day--yum, that article is DUMB! So dumb I wonder if the author really resides in California.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—San Francisco Mayor London Breed has asked all the homeless residents of her city to please poop at home as coronavirus spreads throughout the nation.
"Please, we urge the homeless residents of our great city to please poop in their homes during this crisis," she said in a speech after dodging several piles of feces on the way to the podium. "Return to your homes and relieve yourselves there, not out in public where you might spread the virus."
She also asked them to work at home rather than going outside at least for the next one to two months. "We are all in this together. Whether you're taking care of business or running a business, let's all make sure to do it in the privacy of our own homes. Even if your home happens to be, well, the sidewalk." ... We have bums congregating in my little town, and the Cops had never seen any of them before.
Cop: "So, where are you from?"

"Bum: "The City gave me a bus ticket, marked "Bullhead City, AZ."
So now we have bums sleeping in the Parks, and some hike up the foothills into my neighborhood. Well, let the Yotes deal with 'em. They'll probably get shot if they decide to climb my particular hill, with my Castle.

Well, what it requires is a keen sense of not what they'd do, but how far the Liberals have actually gone, in word and deed. Satire is just on the far side of the line.
It is tough to keep up with, because almost all of TV/pop culture today would have been seen as too far out for satire, if not banned for obscenity in my youth, and the closer we get to today, the thinner the margin between the plausible and the actual.

Besides, I never count on the weather. Last two times I spent any length of time in the desert, for instance, it rained three weeks the first time, and rained and snowed for ten days the second. :shrug:
