At ease: Obama eyes transgendered troops

Having already lifted the “don’t ask, don’t tell” ban on gays in the military, the Pentagon “likely will” allow transgendered Americans to serve openly in the military where 15,500 now secretly serve, according to a new report issued by top former generals.
Three of the top brass, endorsing the deployment of transgendered troops, also said their effort has the support of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and President Obama.
In a statement accompanying the 29-page report issued Tuesday, they said, “Our conclusion is that allowing transgender personnel to serve openly is administratively feasible and will not be burdensome or complicated. Three months have passed since Defense Secretary Hagel announced a willingness to review the military's ban on transgender service, an effort the White House indicated it supports.”
The three are retired Maj. Gen. Gale S. Pollock, former acting surgeon general of the Army; Brig. Gen. Clara Adams-Ender, former chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps; and Brig. Gen. Thomas A. Kolditz, a Yale University professor and professor emeritus at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he led the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership.
The report added, “In May 2014, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel stated that he is open to reviewing the rules that govern service by transgender people, an estimated 15,500 of whom serve currently in the U.S. armed forces. Following his remarks, a White House spokesperson indicated that the administration supports Secretary Hagel’s openness to a regulatory review.
“While the timing of any future policy revision is unknown, the U.S. armed forces likely will, at some point, join the 18 foreign nations and NATO allies that allow transgender personnel to serve openly.”
The report said changing the policy is up to the president. Unlike the “don’t ask, don’t tell” ban repealed by Congress, the transgender ban falls “under the authority and jurisdiction of the president and secretary of defense,” said the “Report of the Planning Commission on Transgender Military Service” published by the Palm Center, an arm of San Francisco State University.
Transgendered Americans don’t see themselves as the sex they were born with and sometimes undergo hormone treatment or sex change surgery. The report suggested that the military allow those in the military who feel that way to get the medical care they need.
And once they make the change, the Pentagon should follow the British model in letting them wear the gender-appropriate uniform they feel most comfortable in.
The report said allowing transgenders to serve “reflects the core military values and principles that all military personnel should serve with honor and integrity, which means that they should not have to lie about who they are.”

Spot on. I do get a touch nervous about trans* as front line. Female to male - they take a while to deal with the aggression aspects. Male to female - they totally rely on reliable deliveries of the hormones they need, which is not always possible. If you thought a woman with PMT is bad, watch a trans female cycling cause she missed a couple of pills! In both cases, the surgery really messes up the pelvis, should they take it that far.
Rear echelon - who cares what gear they got between their legs, as long as the gear between their ears works well. Guy wants to come in in a skirt, I'll salute and call him Ma'am. None of my business.

Agree. This idea that if they can qualify, they can serve, is misguided. You are recruiting people who are known and proven to already have serious mental issues. The physical dosen't matter as much in this case.
When these guys, sputter, sputter.....or 'girls'? snap, everybody in company is at risk. They are obviously not normal, well adjusted people, try putting them in combat, or in the extreme isolation of a submarine, in their already fragile state of mind and see what happens.
I have seen senior officers who grew up in the military 'snap'. What is the overriding imperative to deliberately recruit people like this?

That does seem to be exactly what Obama's plan is. It is hard to argue when we can see clearly, that he is firing soldiers while simultaneously actively recruiting these "Protected Groups" to join up. What the hell is that?

Report: Remove Ban On Transgendered Military Personnel

A report issued by high-ranking generals makes it likely that the military will allow transgendered personnel to serve openly, following in the footsteps of the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” according to the Washington Examiner.
President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel have thrown their support behind the proposal, which was released Tuesday. Written by Maj. Gen. Gale S. Pollock, Brig. Gen. Clara Adams-Ender and Brig. Ge. Thomas A. Kolditz, the report estimates that about 15,500 transgendered personnel are currently serving secretly in the U.S. armed forces.
So far, two dozen personnel have been discharged from the military after their real identity was discovered.
“Our conclusion is that allowing transgender personnel to serve openly is administratively feasible and will not be burdensome or complicated. Three months have passed since Defense Secretary Hagel announced a willingness to review the military’s ban on transgender service, an effort the White House indicated it supports,” the 29-page Report of the Planning Commission on Transgender Military Service states. The report comes from the Palm Center, which operates out of San Francisco State University.
In fact, even if the recommendations of the report move forward, the U.S. would not be the first country to repeal the ban, having been beaten by 18 foreign nations and NATO allies. The decision in this case falls under the jurisdiction of the president and secretary of defense.
Also included in the report is a reminder that transgendered Americans view themselves as a different sex than the one assigned at birth. This means that the military should be open to paying for sex change surgery and hormone treatment. Both male and female uniforms should be open to transgendered personnel, as is the case with the British model.
Only minor modifications of administrative and regulatory burdens are needed in order to permit open service for transgendered personnel, the report argues. And additionally, there is little risk of post-surgical complication as a result of gender transitioning, as the Department of Health and Human Services has labeled it safe.
