By Jorge Fitz-Gibbon
August 1, 2023
New Jersey Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver, the first black woman to serve as speaker of the state Assembly, died Tuesday after being hospitalized with an undisclosed illness.
Oliver, 71, was serving as acting governor this week while Gov. Phil Murphy was vacationing in Italy.
She was admitted to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston on Monday, Murphy’s office announced.
Oliver, a Democrat from Essex County, rose to the post of Assembly speaker in 2010 before losing the seat to Vincent Pietro in 2013, Fox16 reported.

Bidenesque.
... As Oliver entered the hospital Monday, New Jersey’s Senate President Nicholas Scutari took over as acting governor, per the state’s succession plans.
Where is Gov. Phil Murphy?
Murphy is away on an international vacation in Italy, where he owns a home, according to NJ.com.
He will return to New Jersey within “the next few days,” his communications director Mahen Gunaratna said in an email Tuesday. ...

Happening to be away on another continent when Oliver died is no biggie, IMO. Staying away rather than returning as soon as reasonably possible is poor judgment and public service, IMO.

I agree. Then again,NJ is a bought and paid for state ran by the corporations,so maybe it really isn't a big deal if they have no governor for a while?

All the NJ flags are at half mast for a month, per Murphy.
Funeral next week, I believe I heard on Thursday.
