The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) has reissued a notification by China on the future uncontrolled re-entry of the country’s Tiangong-1 space lab.

On March 16, 2016, the Tiangong-1 ceased functioning and to date the spacecraft has maintained its structural integrity.

The space lab’s operational orbit is under constant and close surveillance by China. Its current average altitude is 217 miles (349 kilometers) and it is decaying at a daily rate of approximately 525 feet (160 meters), according to the notification.

Re-entry date

The lab’s re-entry is expected between October 2017 and April 2018. According to the calculations and analysis that have been carried out, most of the structural components of Tiangong-1 will be destroyed through burning during the course of its re-entry.

“The probability of endangering and causing damage to aviation and ground activities is very low,” the notification adds.

Reminds me of the party we had in the summer of 79 in honor of SkyLab crashing to earth.

Tangentially, "UNOOSA" seems like a very silly name for a governmental agency, even if it is a U.N. agency.

We did the same in college.  Had a great big parking lot jungle juice party and guests were given caps with bullseyes on them.

If you search on-line you will see UNOOSA  is headed up by Space Craft  Trajectory Specialist,  Prof. Wi Too Lo and his assistant for crash data gathering is Bang Ding Ow.

Considering it's a U.N. agency, that wouldn't surprise me at all!   :tongue2:

(Yes, I recognized the names...)

Yep, same here.  my little corner of Texas was just like Dazed and Confused.  That movie was incredibly accurate.  Clothes, language, mannerisms.  It was like gong back into time.

Don Henley nailed it:

We got the bubble headed
Bleached blonde
Comes on at five
She can tell you 'bout the plane crash
With a gleam in her eye
It's interesting when people die.....

What happened to Dr. Sum Ting Wong? Did he leave the organization?

@catfish1957

I forget his handle but the actor that played the football coach in Dazed & Confused was a Freeper.

He's on loan to the ATC.

That bummed me out because I couldn't get into Mission Control during that time.  Only mission-critical personnel were allowed.

Everyone thought it was totally uncontrolled re-entry, but in reality they had some control over where to let it drop and it wasn't as big a risk as people thought.

Ideally, it'll crash on the Grand Mosque in Mecca.
