Fauci on Trump coronavirus comments: 'I can't jump in front of the microphone and push him down'
By Justin Wise - 03/23/20 07:23 AM EDT

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in a new interview that he is working with the White House coronavirus task force to help ensure President Trump's remarks about COVID-19 are accurate, though admitted that the effort has its hurdles.

"I can't jump in front of the microphone and push him down," Fauci told Science Magazine on Sunday after being asked about Trump's repeated assertions that China could have disclosed the discovery of the coronavirus up to four months ago. The disease first appeared in the central city of Wuhan in December.

Fauci said that he's told the "appropriate people" that the suggestion does not comport with the facts in the hopes that the president will be more careful about his remarks.

"OK, he said it. Let’s try and get it corrected for the next time," he added.

Fauci said nothing remotely like this to Levin last night. In fact he very clearly said precisely the opposite.

Perhaps he tailors his accounts depending upon whom he's speaking to. Or maybe someone here isn't telling the truth.

Is Fauci the ONLY expert on this and does he has the final say?? I would hope that he would also be consulting with other "experts" at his level.

On the other hand, there is a combo drug out there (with its very real dangers) that seems to be halting this virus ...Trump seems to be ready to give it a green light ("what do we have to lose") -- Fauci wants trials and that is understandable.

This combo drug can cause very dangerous arrhythmia in some people.  One of the drugs is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic which has its own problems in itself.

Experts have also urged caution around the combination of medications. On Saturday, infectious diseases physician Dr. Edsel Salvana warned patients not to take hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin unless prescribed by a doctor. "Both drugs affect the QT interval of your heart and can lead to arrhythmias and sudden death, especially if you are taking other meds or have a heart condition," he wrote.

Trump continues to be his own worst enemy because he says whatever pops into his head instead of what’s always factually accurate.

I know he’ll never learn to be more judicious, but it would certainly help him if he could.

He's painful to listen to when he's being serious and not reading from prepared remarks. You gotta read between his lines, however awkwardly delivered.

Except that most Americans don't want to have to "read between the lines" to figure out what our President is saying.

The less he talks, the more he ad libs, the more confusing he becomes.

America needs clarity right now, so he needs to speak less and read everything he has to say.  Let Pence and others do his talking.

Otherwise the American people don't actually know that he's doing alright in handling this unprecedented health crisis.

Epidemiologists (you know, the people who are educated and informed and not just posting cute things on internet forums?) are saying that this pandemic is still in its infancy.

That is, according to mathematics, and science, and medicine, and all that silly stuff.

ERGO, your crawling, cute stats are MEANINGLESS.

If one is even slightly interested in the truth.

Please point to what is untruthful in what I posted?

And IMHO it far from meaningless that we are doing what we are doing because .0048% of the world has coronavirus.

The public opinion polls, for what they're worth, do not support this opinion.

Perhaps its in the news media's interests to make it seems as though he is confused/confusing.

Skeeter........ I listen to him.  What he says IS confusing, no media interpretation involved.

This is a communication flaw that his loyal supporters seem to refuse to admit is a problem, and I'm not sure why.

Every one of you knows he is a poor communicator (whether you defend it or not).

If the President is speaking in a crisis, even his most loyal fans should want clarity from him and not rambling.

It's just not there.

I truly believe that the majority of Americans really want to be able to trust him in this (the hard core haters will hate him no matter what he says or does, but not most people), but if he says one thing one day that seems to be the opposite of what he's said the day before or different from the experts standing behind him, and if he speaks off the top of his head when he's not being accurate, it harms his cause.

That's all I'm saying.

He should limit his remarks and let others speak for him.

I'm not sure about that.  People are really scared right now (and rightfully so), so it's really important that the messaging is clear.

All he would have to do when asked questions is to defer to the people behind him who know more than he does, and who are advising him.

Of course the media is going to grab up every questionable thing he says because they are evil.

All I am saying is, minimize the confusion and the wince-worthy comments and let others talk for him.  In DeWine's pressers here in Ohio (he is actually quite articulate) he defers the questions to the experts behind him every day.  Trump needs to swallow his pride for a change, and let other people do the talking.

I hope he can do that.....

You know I have been standing in a more than a few lines at stores since this insanity started started and not one of the people young or old were talking about being panicked, they pretty much expressed the opinion that this was all being blown out of proportion especially considering past situations like H1N1 and even just the flu. I'm not saying there aren't panicked people out there, because the media and democrats have done a damn good of stirring it up.

I probably shouldn't have used the word "scared."  More accurate would have been "concerned."   (Though I have seen posts from a number of very brave healthcare workers who have used the word "frightened," because every time they go into work, especially without adequate PPE's, they are taking their lives into their hands).

In any case, the point remains the same.......  in a time of national crisis, it is best if our President can be clear and concise, and understood without an interpreter or "reading between the lines."

He needs to make brief statements of reassurance about what is being done and let the people behind him give the details clearly.

Noe of them said we were unnecessarily paniicked, of mentioned the "Faucci is a Hillary-loving stooge" position.

Sorry, but  think we have discovered a new "groupthink."

This dastardly Raucci is the most powerful influential, persuassive guy of all time.

He convince Potus, VP, Pompeo, 535 members of Congress, the military.

Thank you for asking @skeeter In 1988 I was fairly fresh out of high school, with a mindset that the world owed me a job, then I found Rush Limbaugh and began watching politics and voting GOP.  In 1994 I joined my Wisconsin state Republican party where I worked in the fundraising dept for almost 8 years.  I was at TOS from 1999 (2000?) until 2012. I befriended conservatives like  jveritas; PRND21; COEXERJ145; ClintonBeGone; Dane; Cultural Jihad; Ben Ficklin; nopardons; Gipper08; neverdem; onyx; Howlin; Poohbah; MNJohnny; and @mystery-ak who invited me to GOPachy in 2008 and GOPbriefingroom in 2012.

GOP Wages War Against Its Conservatives

Reagan certainly never surrendered his principles before the battle was even joined, a favorite tactic of 'practical' republicans.

Reagan campaigned on a platform of balancing the budget and cutting government spending, but he also wanted increased military spending and taxcuts. Reagan comprimised to get what he wanted. This is not a slam on Reagan. It is smart politics. In order to pass legislation you need 60 votes in the Senate just to release a bill from cloture. Reagan never had 60 hard core conservatives in the Senate. He had 35 - 40 solid conservative Republicans and 20-25 RINOs and DINOs that were willing to give something if Reagan would give something.

Politics is by its very nature a tradeoff and those who refuse to trade get nothing, and most often get screwed. I present Patrick J Buchanan as proof. 1992's hero of the far right and harbinger anti-Christ to the beast Clinton.

After re-reading my posts to you, I am sure we can agree I'm still an @sshole but no longer a GOP flag waver.

After 12 years of supporting the GOP candidates Bush, McCain, and Romney zealously at FR, it was only a matter of time until I was permanently banned for not joining FR cannibals in their destructive feast of the GOP.  here is my post history http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/by:onceler/index?tab=comments;brevity=full;options=no-change (http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/by:onceler/index?tab=comments;brevity=full;options=no-change) (it goes back to 06 2002.)  I settled in here and life was good until in 2016 when the GOP nominated President Trump and my last official vote was for Sen Ted Cruz in the Wisconsin presidential primary.

I would like Ian Somerhalder to play me in the movie of my life.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't mean to imply that you weren't a member of TOS, I have no reason to doubt you were. I only mention it because I have no way to determine whether you have indeed 'evolved' as I've heard mentioned.

And I understand why you become disenchanted with the GOP. Most of us have. I just don't understand why you behave the way you do here, constantly tweaking others with whom you presumably used to have more in common.

BTW PRND1 was an arsehole.

I just don't understand why you behave the way you do here, constantly tweaking others with whom you presumably used to have more in common.

Trump continues to be his own worst enemy because he says whatever pops into his head instead of what’s always factually accurate.
I know he’ll never learn to be more judicious, but it would certainly help him if he could.

Indeed.
Learning requires a price, namely discipline which Trump has never paid.
As a consequence he is scatterbrained every time he opens his mouth.
