Plouffe: No special prosecutor necessary in IRS scandal

Former White House senior adviser David Plouffe said Sunday that no special prosecutor is necessary on the scandal that has engulfed the Internal Revenue Service.

Presented with a Quinnipiac poll that showed an overwhelming majority of Americans believe that a special prosecutor should be appointed to investigate the targeting of conservative groups, Plouffe said that wasn’t a step that was necessary given concurrent investigations by the administration and Congress

“If people knew that the Department of Justice was engaged in a criminal investigation, you had Treasury undertaking the IRS a 30-day review, you have any number of congressional committee spending an inordinate amount of time on this,” Plouffe said on ABC’s “This Week.” “This is going to be looked in thoroughly, as it should be.”

Plouffe acknowledged that Americans had a right to be upset over the scandal, however.

“People should be concerned about the IRS, it touches everybody in America,” he said.

But the most important step, Plouffe said, was making sure the scandal doesn’t repeat itself.

“The American people want to know is what is going to happen in terms of accountability, what changes are going to be put in place,” he said.
