Even Tom Cruise can’t make a politically correct climate satire against Big Oil funny
By Jo Nova

And the crowd hates it
It looks like climate activists accidentally made a $180 million dollar mass-market movie that only appeals to the doomster greenie fringe who hate old white men and Big Oil.

The only reviewers with anything good to say, are ‘surprise’ the ABC and the BBC. “Digger might just be the year’s best film — if you trust the process”, says the ABC cryptically. But over at lefty headquarters, the New York Times headlines it with “Even Tom Cruise can’t save this strained satire”. It’s that bad.

Tom Cruise plays an ugly old white oil tycoon who’s team cracks a glacier in half in Greenland. According to the BBC this is the moment “reality hits when an iceberg the size of a small country splits from the glacier and starts drifting towards northern Europe. In a matter of days, a tsunami will put several major cities under water.” Righto. So they spent $180 million, but didn’t waste a cent paying any scientists to help with the script? Floating ice doesn’t raise sea levels much when it melts.

The BBC reviewer, Nicholas Barber, goes on to say that a scientist (a character in the movie) helps to convince them on a plan to use the military “to change the iceberg’s direction”. I keep waiting for Barber to explain why this was not the strong point of the script but he says: “What’s fascinating about the scenario is that it would have seemed embarrassingly over-the-top a few years ago, but now seems as plausible as a documentary. ” (Only if you work at the BBC, eh?)
