Spain opens path to citizenship for tens of thousands of people from Western Sahara
The Spanish parliament has approved a bill that would allow residents of Western Sahara born before September 29, 1977, to obtain Spanish citizenship.
The right would also extend to their descendants. The bill still needs to pass the Senate.
The decision could further strain relations with Morocco, whose authorities control most of Western Sahara and claim it as Moroccan territory.
The issue is especially sensitive now, as thousands of migrants have been crossing the border from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
It was previously reported that Spanish intelligence had warned of a planned mass border breach in July.
One day before the crisis, it alerted both Spanish and Moroccan authorities to calls on social media urging people to storm the border.
However, the Spanish government says it could not have anticipated the scale of what happened.
