Not necessarily. My first thought when I read this is that it was something he did. Some kind of additive that he put in the gas, or something like that. I'm trying to think of a way that I could rig a chainsaw to explode. Can't think of any short of some explosive of some kind. Like putting super high octane in the gas.

You can catch a chainsaw 'on fire' fairly easily. But to make it actually explode with normal gas would be hard to do, especially to the point that it would kill a person. You need pressure and a sealed chamber for that.

Nah...I don't believe it. This was not a 'normal' accident IMO. Either the guy himself did something really stupid, or....somebody took him out.

I used to work for attorneys who defended product liability actions.  It can be difficult to prove that the plaintiff did something that caused or contributed to his death, and many times even with proof, juries are taken in by the tearful widow on the witness stand and award her big bucks anyway.   I would hope the chainsaw (or what's left of it) is preserved and available for analysis by an independent expert.  That saw would probably be a defendant's best evidence to withstand any lawsuit.

This story makes no sense. Warrington Township is in Bucks County. York County is south of Harrisburg on the MD border. It makes sense he would be flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital if he was in Bucks because we have a fairly serious burn center here, but there is no way they shipped him up from York.

He's evidently from Dover, in York County.  The accident was in Warrington Twp., in Bucks.  The news organizations got confoosed.

Octane reduces volatility. It is actually harder to burn a higher octane fuel than a lower octane one, which is why high octane fuels are required for high compression engines. Octane booster should not have caused the saw to explode. Short of nitroglycerin, nothing he added should have caused a motor to explode.

Exactly. First off I can't remember ever running across a a chainsaw that wasn't 50:1 mix of gas. You can put a cigarette out in that. Secondly I have seen an engine mechanically explode. It isn't like a bomb going off.

Boys, it was probably a lithium ion battery powered chainsaw.
