President Obama’s nominee to head the Internal Revenue Service vowed during his confirmation hearing Tuesday to work to restore the public’s trust in the scandal-plagued agency and said he will cooperate fully with the congressional investigation into the IRS targeting of conservative groups.

John Koskinen told the Senate Finance Committee that the successful operation of the IRS is vital for the country because it touches every American and said one of his first jobs will be to restore the public trust in the agency

“In every area of the IRS, taxpayers need to be confident that they will be treated fairly no matter what their backgrounds or their affiliations,” Mr. Koskinen said. “Public trust is the IRS‘ most important and valuable asset.”

If confirmed, Mr. Koskinen will take over the agency, which has 90,000 employees, as it prepares to take on the new responsibility of administering the president’s health care law.

Mr. Obama forced acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller to step down from his post in May after the Treasury Inspector General for tax administration, the IRS top watchdog, released an audit that said the agency was inappropriately targeting conservative groups that had “tea party,” “patriot” or “9/12” in their names, giving them extra scrutiny in their applications for tax-exempt status. The audit found that the IRS delayed the applications, in some cases for years.

The investigation into what happened is ongoing, and Mr. Koskinen said he will work with the committee to conclude that work.

Mr. Obama nominated Mr. Koskinen, who served as the former non-executive chairman at housing finance giant Freddie Mac in the wake of the financial crisis, to the post in August. He would replace Danny Werfel, a White House budget aide Mr. Obama named as temporary agency chief in May.

This guy is from my hometown (we graduated from the same high school), from all accounts around here, he is a good guy.  I hope he doesn't get tainted by this administration.
