China has to take it. Given that Japan and Australia have stated they will defend Taiwan then China will be facing a regional war if they attempt this.

Japan is all in with their commitment while Australia is cagey about theirs since they don't want to mess up their iron ore trade with China.

Thinking like a commie ...

... they need a crisis, real or manufactured

... false flag attacks on Chi-com civilian or commercial assets or vessels

... a natural disaster, like an earthquake, tsunami, or cyclone to which the Chi-coms can offer 'disaster relief'

... or, in the dark of night, some Taiwanese Government officials 'invite' them in

... a dispute of the borders of both nations' Exclusive Economic Zones

... there's always the rapid, overwhelming invasion while the West, and maybe Taiwan, are distracted with other things

... once the Chi-coms have troops on Taiwan, it will be too late for the West.  They will have to decide if they want a hot war against a Global nuclear power.

... I suspect in the absence of fate, the Chi-com's will encroach upon Taiwan's sovereignty to provoke a Taiwanese miltary reponse that will 'justify' China's further military actions against Taiwan.

The Chi-com's will embed as many agents as it can in Taiwan so it can attack from the outside and the inside simultaneously.

Any direct conflict with China will need to be a coordinated, multi-lateral campaign of total war.

Taiwan belongs to General Chiang Kai-shek and the army that fought against Mao in China until they were betrayed by the United States Department of State.

Never happen. More Chinese fear-mongering. They would lose huge numbers of troops in any attempt. There are no social services to care for the families of the dead, who, having their sole source of income killed, would rise up, endangering the rule of the CCP. The CCP's number one rule is to do nothing to endanger its existence.

The CCP barely got away with hiding the numbers of COVID dead, with locking people in their homes, with refusing to open the building, even when it was on fire. Any invasion would recreate all of the enmity that the people felt and demonstrated against once again but with renewed grief and anger at the CCP.
