Trump should close the border and tell Congress, until you reform immigration, the border will remain closed. Of course that is wishful thinking on my part, because he has to get elected, and I am not hopeful because of the fixed election routine, which no one wants to recognize as reality.

States already have that power, as per Article I, section 10 of the Constitution. They just choose not to enforce it,
In my state, I do not go to the federal government for protection from illegals that commit crimes, I demand protection by my state authorities.
One is naïve and compliant if you simply wait for the feds to control your borders, and ultimately you will be terminated.
That is the reason the sovereign states wrote Art I Sec 10 the way they did, as in no way, shape or form did a state give up its sovereign right to protect its borders when invaded.
