Vladimir Putin is sending an air defence system to Syria and a warship to the Mediterranean as tensions grow with Turkey. Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu confirmed the advanced S-400 air defence system was being deployed to the war torn country. It will be taken to a Russian air base in Syria's Latakia province. It also emerged today that Putin is deploying a warship to the Mediterranean. It comes after Turkey shot down a Russian fighter jet yesterday which it claimed had violated its airspace.

The furious Russian president has broken off military contact with Turkey and dispatched the warship. . Russia says it will destroy “any targets representing a potential danger” to its military working in Syria. As reported by the Daily Mail, Russian bombers will now also be escorted by jets while carrying out raids in Syria. Pavel Felgenhauer, a Russian military analysts , said war with Turkey was 'most likely'. In a tense escalation of the Middle East crisis, Putin warned Turkey – a key member of Nato and ally of Britain – of “significant consequences” . At least one pilot is believed to have been killed near the Syrian border by rebels as the airmen parachuted from the blazing jet.

NATO may be about to join the USSR on the trash heap of history. It isn't coming to the defense of France...and a few weeks later, Putin may be about to shatter it to pieces.

Do you think the strategic value of Turkey to NATO is a relic from another time?

Has NATO officially denied a request by France? Or are member nations providing what was requested?

The USSR was primarily Russia, all along. And Russia now wants back to the top of international power circles.

Russia is opportunistically taking advantage of Obama's weakness, with perfect timing.

Maybe a shakeup of the order, is overdue. Perhaps Russia is more likely to avenge the Paris attack, than Turkey.

I don't think NATO will become history by denying requests, it will become irrelevant because the background politics will result in requests never being made.  It will die with a whimper not a bang...it will just fade away to nothing, an afterthought.  It will fade away because Russia becomes more useful to France than does the U.S. Or Turkey - member states that are actually now a hinderance not a help.  And when and if Russia forcibly exacts it's revenge on Turkey, not a peep will be heard from NATO...it will die from irrelevance.

I think it is almost dead now.

Decades ago Turkey stood to benefit from association with Europe. It wanted to join Europe in the more prosperous, developed world. And I suspect NATO gave them plenty, in return for missile sites targeted at the USSR.

Today Turkey appears to have more in common with Islamic states, then with Europe.

So if Russia and France have common interests, and Turkey does not, why not let history march along, and why not abandon Turkey to the insanity of their region?

Turkey refused us help in 2003, and Turkey is against the Kurds. Why should we support Turkey?

Very good question.  Besides, Turkey is run by a thug who is turning the country into a Muslim paradise.

I would fully support Obama standing on the sidelines when Russia exacts its revenge on Erdogan.

I personally don't think we should help Turkey, I think Russia is in the right here. Though with Hussein Obama in charge, I suspect that we will take the wrong side...Turkey's side.  I am merely pointing out that one casualty of all this may be NATO.

The original point of NATO ended with the fall of the U.S.S.R. It has been a defunct organization for years, existing only as a name. I agree that NATO may dissolve, however I'm not sure that it would change anything at all.

The country most affected by dissolution of NATO is Turkey. How ironic is it that they would be the ones to cause it.

There is no viable, strong NATO without the USA leading it.

NATO won't dissolve.  It will remain in a coma until  about the last week of January, 2017.

How interesting this could play out. Russia effectively kills NATO in a skirmish with Turkey amid an absent USA, while at the same time bringing Europe closer to it's orbit in showing leadership on the terrorist issue.

I doubt that Turkey shot down that SU-24 without the explicit prior approval of the U.S.

Hopefully we will hang the Turks out to dry... and not use the Russian response as an excuse to declare war on Russia for 'attacking' a NATO ally...

Has anyone seen any official WH pronouncements on this developing situation? I did a news search using a variety of terms and got nothing. Anyone else?

Once again I am extremely disappointed we have that clown Obama as President at this time. He floated along for 7 years without a major international crisis and now he has at least 2, maybe 3, on his plate, and he is obviously not capable of dealing with any of it.

God save us all.

You did not search hard enough. I did find comments from Obama about Turkey. He pardoned it.

I wonder if Obama told Putin not to bring anything heavier than a bean bag cannon? :silly:
