Biden crosses the red line of decency

It’s a bad idea to tempt fate with the words, “Joe Biden has hit bottom and can’t sink lower.” This president can, it seems, always get worse.

Betraying Israel to pander to his far-Left voter base by cutting off arms supplies unless Jerusalem agrees to military micromanagement by the dotard in the White House is a new level of disgrace even for this awful administration.

Biden told CNN Wednesday night that he won’t send artillery shells and bombs to the Israel Defense Forces if they enter Rafah city, where a million Palestinians are being used as human shields by four brigades of Hamas terrorists.

“If they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah. … It’s just wrong,” he said.

What’s really wrong is, first, Biden limiting Jerusalem’s scope for action against an enemy that endlessly threatens and repeatedly attempts genocide against the Jews and, second, seeking to justify this with the lie that Israel takes too little care to avoid civilian casualties.

James Carville was once known for his quick wit and political acumen. But in a viral video, the longtime Democratic strategist appeared at his wits’ end over Donald Trump’s growing influence. Carville blasted the shifting political attitudes and growing support for Trump, despite the lasting implications of the January 6th Capitol breach.

“Fewer people think January 6th was an assault on the temple of democracy,” Carville said, exasperated. “We’re throwing spaghetti at a wall, and none of it is sticking, me included.” Facing his 80th birthday, Carville admitted he feels powerless. “I don’t matter. It doesn’t matter,” he said in a video on X. “You can prepare, be on TV, write, have a YouTube channel, a podcast, and nothing.”

Frustrated with the current messaging strategies, Carville acknowledged the need for a fresh approach. “We’ve got to try to think of something different because what we’re doing is really not working.”

As Trump continues to solidify his support, Carville’s candid remarks capture a sense of urgency within the Democratic camp, desperate to develop a strategy that can compete against the former president’s enduring influence.

The 2024 Electoral College map

THE 2024 ELECTORAL COLLEGE MAP. Historically speaking, the 2024 presidential campaign is at a pretty advanced stage. At this point in some earlier races, we didn’t even know for sure who the candidates would be. Now, both parties have made clear their choice of nominee, the earliest that has ever happened, and we’ve been in general election mode for quite a while.

And that means it’s time to pay serious attention to the Electoral College map. I often use a site called 270towin.com, referring to the 270 electoral votes needed to secure the presidency. You can set the map to show the 2020 Trump-Biden results and then mess around with what the electoral totals would be if this or that state changed one way or the other.

Start by going back a few years. Former President Donald Trump won in 2016 by winning all the states Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) won in 2012 and adding victories in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa. It was a stunning 306 to 232 victory in the Electoral College. For years, many analysts had seen the upper Midwestern states as part of a Democratic “blue wall,” and Trump just smashed it down.

Trump lost in 2020 by holding most of the states he won in 2016 but losing Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The results in some of those states were quite close, but in the Electoral College, Joe Biden won 306 to 232.

So now, with a Trump-Biden rematch, what does Trump have to do to win? The first thing to say is that the number of electoral votes in some states has changed because of the 2020 census. For example, in 2020 Trump won 38 votes for winning Texas. He will win 40 for winning Texas in 2024. Biden won 55 votes for winning California in 2020. He will win 54 by winning in 2024. Biden won in 2020 with 306 electoral votes. If he won the same states today, he would win 303 electoral votes and Trump would win 235.

Ninth Circuit: Felon Has ‘Right to Possess Firearm for Self-Defense’

AWR Hawkins 10 May 2024

On Thursday a three-judge panel from the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit decided that Steven Duarte, a felon, has a “right to possess a firearm for self-defense.”

Courthouse News Service noted Duarte has five felony convictions and was a member of a street gang in Los Angeles.

The decision upholding Duarte’s gun rights was split, with George W. Bush appointee Carlos Bea and Donald Trump appointee Lawrence VanDyke deciding in the majority.

Bea wrote the majority opinion, noted the panel tested the prohibition against felons possessing guns in light of Bruen (2022) and found the government did not have a sufficient substantiation.

Bruen requires that gun control align with historical tradition and the intent of America’s founders. Bea and VanDyke did not believe the blanket prohibition against felons possessing firearms survived scrutiny.

Bea wrote:

We do not base our decision on the notion that felons should not be prohibited from possessing firearms. As a matter of policy, [the prohibition] may make a great deal of sense. But “[t]he very enumeration of the [Second Amendment] right” in our Constitution “takes out of [our] hands . . . the power to decide” for which Americans “th[at] right is really worth insisting upon.” (Heller).

He added:

Duarte is an American citizen, and thus one of “the people” whom the Second Amendment protects. The Second Amendment’s plain text and historically understood meaning therefore presumptively guarantee his individual right to possess a firearm for self-defense. The Government failed to rebut that presumption by demonstrating that permanently depriving Duarte of this fundamental right is otherwise consistent with our Nation’s history. We therefore hold that [the prohibition] violates Duarte’s Second Amendment rights and is unconstitutional as applied to him.

The case is USA v. Duarte in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Prosecutors say they have told both Cohen and Daniels to stay hush about the case
By Ben Kochman

Prosecutor Josh Steinglass said his office has repeatedly told Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels to stay quiet about the case -- so far to no avail.

"We have repeatedly asked the witnesses not to do that, but the fact of the matter is that the witnesses are not subject to the gag order," Steinglass told the court.

Cohen has repeatedly spoken about the case, as recently as Wednesday night on TikTok, Donald Trump's lawyer said.

Daniels also posted on X Thursday night, in a taunt to Trump, that "real men respond to testimony by being sworn in and taking the stand in court. Oh...wait. Nevermind."

Trump's attorney asks judge to put gag order on Michael Cohen over TikTok posts
By Kyle Schnitzer

Todd Blanche asked the judge to tell Michael Cohen to cool it with his TikTok posts after Cohen posted a new one Wednesday.

“He’s wearing a white T-shirt with a picture of President Trump behind bars," Blanche told the judge.

"It's becoming improper every day that President Trump is not allowed to talk to this witness, but he continues to talk."

Justice Juan Merchan asked Manhattan prosecutors to tell Cohen to "refrain from making any more statements" about Trump or the trial.

"That comes from the bench," Merchan said.

Prosecutors said they have instructed all witnesses and potential witnesses to refrain from talking about the case.

Two witnesses expected to be called, prosecutors could rest next week
By Kyle Schnitzer

Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joshua Steinglass said prosecutors plan to call two witnesses next week — and that their case could possibly rest by the end of the week.

“We expect to call eventually two witnesses and I think it’s entirely possible that we will rest by the end of next week," Steinglass said.

Michael Cohen is expected to be the first witness Monday.

'I'd be very proud to go to jail for our Constitution,' Trump says of gag order
By Kaydi Pelletier

Donald Trump is talking to reporters in the court hallway after trial just ended for the day.

He again blasted the gag order that prevents him from publicly speaking about witnesses or jury members, saying the judge wants to throw him in jail if he says one word out of line.

"That could happen one day," Trump said. "And I'd be very proud to go to jail for our Constitution."

Solar storm heading to Earth could disrupt communications and bring northern lights to California

MSN.COM
By Corinne Purtill
May 10, 2024

A different kind of storm could complicate this weekend’s plans.

For the first time since January 2005, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch for Friday evening.

The category G4 watch from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center signals the possibility that a concentration of energy flaring from the Sun could disturb our planet’s electromagnetic field once it reaches Earth.

A geomagnetic storm of this size could disrupt communications, like the 2003 event that caused blackouts in Sweden and damaged South Africa’s power grid.

More promisingly, super-charged collisions of solar energy into the gas of our atmosphere creates the dazzling phenomena of aurora borealis, or the northern lights. Typically confined to polar regions, the colorful display could be visible this weekend as far south as Northern California.

“We have a very rare event on our hands,” space weather forecaster Shawn Dahl of SWPC said during a news conference Friday morning.
