Are NYC Cops Preparing to Abandon Ship?
Blue lives matter.

Is the Big Apple about to witness an exodus of cops from the force? That's what The New York Post is asking after reporting that nearly 600 of the city's boys in blue nearing retirement age have signed up for a pension seminar next week — four times the number who normally sign up by this point:
The Tuesday event for members of the officers, sergeants and detectives unions will be held in Queens Village and feature retirement advice from Joe Maccone, former commanding officer of the NYPD’s pension section. The venue holds 700, and organizers fear they will be forced to turn some people away at the doors.

This is what the left is aiming for. If the police jump ship, they can declare a state of emergency and militarize the police force by using the National Guard, to be replaced later by their own version.
-
They should take the money and run from that hell hole.

DeCommio is Obama on a smaller stage.

NYPD has some 35,000 police officers and thousands of additional employees.

So you're OK with the crappy treatment they've received from the current mayor and his administration?
4 times the normal amount of people showing up for a retirement seminar isn't a sign of deeper problems to you?

Stop listening to those voices in your head. I was giving some perspective to the thing for the benefit of the majority of people here who would have no idea of the size of NYPD.

Considering all the personnel were nearly retirement age... all this shows was that there was a hiring spike about 40-50 years ago.

I guess it depends on when they joined the force. Kinds like the military... you could be under 40 years of age and eligible for retirement.

True, but the point still remains that all this shows is that there was a hiring spike a few decades ago.

Agreed. Probably about the time that Rudy became mayor and declared war on the Mob in the Fulton Fish Market area and decided to clean up Times Square.

Timing fits.

Chicago is running into the same problem. Rhambo said he was adding 1,000 cops to the force but there is something like 750 of them making plans to "retire" with full pensions. Of course no one knows where the money will come from, their bond rating is junk already.

Not necessarily:
The NYPD did have a spike in hiring from 1,593 to 2,418 between 1996 and 1997 — and cops can retire with full pensions after 20 years.
But PBA officials said RSVPs had never before surged like this — even when the event fell 20 years after a similar peak in hiring.
That's a 50% spike in hiring, but a 450% spike in attendance at the retirement seminar. The article doesn't go into it, but I imagine that not every officer eligible for retirement normally takes it -- benefits seem to be only 50% of salary. These numbers suggest that a much higher than normal percentage of those eligible for retirement are actually taking it.

So, if al Qaeda et al wanted to destroy New York, they didn't have to go to all of that trouble with hijacking airplanes, cutting-flight-crews' throats, crashing into buildings and things. All they had to do was get Democrats elected mayor, governor and senator.
