Joe Biden on Why He Hasn't Launched a 2020 Bid Yet: He Wants to Be the Last Democrat to Enter Race
By Daniel Moritz-Rabson On 4/5/19 at 2:20 PM EDT

Former Vice President Joe Biden said Friday that he hadn't made an announcement about his potential 2020 presidential bid because he wants to be the last Democratic contender to enter the race, if he chooses to run.

"I'm told by lawyers that I've got to be careful what I say so that I don't start a clock ticking and change my status, but I am very close to making a decision to stand before you all relatively soon," he said to reporters.

"Even if I knew for certain that I was going to run for president back at Thanksgiving, my intention from the beginning, if I were to run, would be [to be] the last person to announce. So give everybody else their day, then I get a shot, and then [we're] off to the races."

But Will Marshall, president and founder of the Progressive Policy Institute, questioned why Biden would want to delay his official announcement.

"If he's going to run, it's hard to see what Biden gains by delaying his announcement," Marshall told Newsweek. "Jumping in now might help him change the tenor of the coverage he's been getting. In any case, the prospect of running against him isn't deterring other Democrats from joining the race."

He's sorry, but not really sorry..

People remember he was VP, but nothing he did.

He's a hands on type of guy.

He needs to wait till the last minute to lessen the impact of the slime on him.

What more can you expect from a man with a plate in his head?  I think he has a whole dinner set of china in there.

Nobody with half a brain would run for president in that condition...

I wonder if Joe's the least bit concerned that the President he served under for eight years hasn't endorsed --- or defended him.

Could there be a message in this?

Could there be a message in this?

It's a clear message that 0bama doesn't want him to run, because it would put him in the uncomfortable position of having to explain why he supports Harris over the "best VP ever".

But that's just one of Biden's problems. The early primaries don't favor him. He's no longer in his party's mainstream. His record has some major blemishes. There could be more women in the woodwork, possibly with more serious allegations that might even be true, not that that matters much. SNL could easily obliterate him if they wanted to clear the path for an opponent.

Best case is he gets enough traction that it comes down to a head-to-head matchup with Sanders (because whatever support Biden gets won't come from Sanders rabid supporters, and as other socialists drop out Sanders will inherit more of their supporters). When you compare the joke of a campaign he's run twice before to Sanders' strong run against Clinton, it's hard to see Biden coming out on top. Clinton probably wouldn't have without the DNC rigging the outcome, and the party has lurched far to the left since 2016.
