Clintons left White House 'in debt'

By Rebecca Shabad

Hillary Clinton is defending taking public speaking fees, saying that she and President Bill Clinton left the White House “dead broke.”

"We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt," Clinton told ABC News  in an interview airing Tuesday,. "We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea's education. You know, it was not easy."

Clinton’s individual speaking fees average $200,000 per appearance, ABC News notes. She pointed out she has also delivered a number of free speeches.

Her husband, she said, has also worked hard to pay off their debts.

“Bill has worked really hard — and it's been amazing to me — he's worked very hard. First of all, we had to pay off all our debts, which was, you know, he had to make double the money because of obviously taxes and then pay off the debts and get us houses and take care of family members."

Clinton said giving paid speeches allows her to not get attached to a particular group.

"I thought making speeches for money was a much better thing than getting connected with any one group or company as so many people who leave public life do.”

ABC News will air the interview Tuesday in a one-hour special at 9 p.m. ET. Clinton will sit down for a live interview on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday morning.

Clinton’s memoir Hard Choices is due out in bookstores Tuesday.

Former First Lady Hillary Clinton isn't ashamed of the massive amount of money she and husband Bill Clinton have earned over the last decade through high-paying speaking gigs.

Hitting the speaking circuit was a necessity in order to maintain their lifestyle after Bill's term as the 42nd President of the United States ended, Clinton told ABC's Diane Sawyer in a sit-down interview ahead of the release of her book Hard Choices.

'We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt,' Clinton said. 'We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea's education.'

'You know, it was not easy.'

Clintons Return White House Furniture

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=121856&page=1&singlePage=true

Quote
Former President Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, have sent $28,000 worth of household goods back to Washington after questions arose over whether the items were intended as personal gifts or donations to the White House.

“We have been informed that it is being shipped back, and the National Park Service is ready to receive it, take possession of it and take custody of it,” Jim McDaniel, the National Park Service’s liaison to the White House, said Wednesday.

“The property is being returned to government custody until such time that the issues can be resolved. It may well turn out that that property is rightly the personal property of the Clintons.”

Giving Back

After they were criticized for taking $190,000 worth of china, flatware, rugs, televisions, sofas and other gifts with them when they left, the Clintons announced last week that they would pay for $86,000 worth of gifts, or nearly half the amount.

Their latest decision to send back $28,000 in gifts brings to $114,000 the value of items the Clintons have either decided to pay for or return.

McDaniel discussed the matter Wednesday with Betty Monkman, the White House curator, and Gary Walters, the chief usher, or executive manager of the White House.

They were reviewing the gifts the Clintons chose to keep after $28,000 worth of items were found on a list of donations the Park Service received for the 1993 White House redecoration project. The Washington Post this week quoted three people who said that they assumed the furnishings they donated for the project would stay in the White House.

“As a result of questions about the status of certain property donated to the White House during the Clinton administration, the National Park Service will accept the return of the property in question and act as a custodian of such property,” according to a statement released by the Park Service, which administers the White House as a unit of the national park system.

A person familiar with the Clintons’ move out of the White House, who spoke on condition of anonymity, would say only: “They’ve been returned.”

Furniture Movers

While the Clintons’ decision to return these gifts was a way to get out from under this and other criticism surrounding their departure from the White House, the couple provided scant details about the shipment.

Mrs. Clinton’s office referred all questions about the gift return to the former president’s transition office. Transition office workers said the Clintons would make no statement. They referred all questions to the Park Service, which wasn’t exactly sure which gifts were being returned or where they had been kept.

In a statement released Monday, Clinton’s transition office said every item they accepted was identified by the White House gift office as a present to them. They said none of the gifts taken was on a curator’s list of official White House property.

“Gifts did not leave the White House without the approval of the White House usher’s and curator’s offices,” the statement said. “Of course, if the White House now determines that a cataloging error occurred, ... any item in question will be returned.”

Instead of waiting for the issue to be resolved, the Clintons returned the items.

The gifts in question were: A kitchen table and four chairs valued at $3,650 from Lee Ficks of Cincinnati, Ohio; a $1,000 needlepoint rug from David Martinous of Little Rock, Ark.; two sofas, an easy chair and an ottoman worth $19,900 from Steve Mittman of New York; lamps valued at $1,170 from Stuart Shiller of Hialeah, Fla.; and a $2,843 sofa from Brad Noe, a businessman from California.

The gifts were just one of several flaps that followed the Clintons out of the White House:

Lawmakers are questioning Clinton’s desire to rent expensive office space in New York City at government expense. Because of the contention, the former president’s foundation has offered to pay at least $300,000 of an estimated $790,000 annual rent for the office Clinton favors.

Mrs. Clinton, the new senator from New York, has faced questions about the propriety of accepting the gifts in the period between her election and her swearing-in. Senate rules would have limited what she could accept had she been a senator.

Members of both parties also have criticized Clinton for granting scores of eleventh-hour clemency requests, including the pardon of Marc Rich, a fugitive in Switzerland from 51 counts in the United States of tax evasion and fraud.

Clintons Were 'Dead Broke' but Spent Millions on Homes in D.C. and New York

by Charlie Spiering 9 Jun 2014, 9:19 AM PDT

Hillary Clinton explained that her family was “dead broke” by the time that her husband, President Bill Clinton, left the White House, but the couple still spent millions on expensive homes in Washington, D.C. and New York.

“We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt,” Clinton told ABC's Diane Sawyer, adding that “it was not easy” for the Clintons financially.

Prior to departing the White House, the Clintons purchased a $1.7 million home in Chappaqua, New York in September of 1999, according to the Washington Post at the time.

The home, an 11-room, five-bedroom, 100-year-old Dutch colonial house, was one of Hillary Clinton’s first steps to establish residency in the state so that she could run for the Senate.

In December of 2000, the Clintons also purchased a home in Washington, D.C., after Hillary was elected senator of New York.

The five-bedroom, brick colonial-style was purchased by the Clintons for $2.85 million, and is currently assessed for over $5 million, according to District of Columbia records.

They stole from the white house and trashed it when they left. Now they are trying to rectify what they did? Stealing is stealing and vandalism is still vandalism and 14 years later it is silly to think sane people will vote for this woman because she returned some of those items. The problem with this country is we have way to many insane and idiotic people who vote.

It was $12m in June 2001, but the idea that they were penny-pinching upon leaving the WH is just so stupid that even their hard-core lefties won't believe it.

Besides, what does being broke have to do with HRC still accepting $200k for speaking engagements to this day?

“Broke” Hillary Bought 2 Mansions for $4.5 Mil After Leaving White House

Bill and Hillary are ordinary people just like you. Sure she scores $200K per speech and he takes home $500K per speech, but that’s just because they were broke and trying to make ends meet.

Hillary Clinton, who recently raked in $5 million dollars in speaking fees in 15 months, recounted to Diane Sawyer the sad tale of her former destitution, telling her, “We came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt.”

According to Clinton, she and her husband, who has made over $100 million since leaving the White House, “struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea’s education, you know, it was not easy.”

But, as Clinton’s story goes, the two hard-working, middle-class millionaires somehow managed to put food on the table in their multiple houses, even though they “had to make double the money, because of, obviously, taxes, and then pay off the debts and get us houses and take care of family members.”

Taxes. Those suck, don’t they.

Right out of the White House, the Clintons bought a $1.6 million Dutch colonial mansion in Westchester for $1.7 million and a $2.85 another colonial mansion on Embassy Row in Washington.

Interestingly enough that home had been listed at $3.5 million, but the Clintons always have a way of getting a “good deal”.

It had five bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms. (The New York one only had four bathrooms.) Just the sort of thing working people pick up on the side so that Hillary would have a place in D.C. to write her memoirs. (Her other memoirs, which she also didn’t write.)

Bill and Hillary made a down payment of $855,000. Just like broke people do. They made a down payment of $350,000 on  their first home.

The Clintons did leave the White House with huge debts, but they also had large sources of wealth including a blind trust that was making all sorts of interesting investments.

For instance, the blind trust managed by Citigroup was heavily invested in overseas companies, including $30,000 to $100,000 in two Asian companies — Hong Kong and China Gas, and Hutchison Whampoa. The latter was involved in a controversy last year because of it received a U.S. contract to scan some U.S.-bound ships for nuclear material. Some lawmakers worried that the work could allow China to gain access to sensitive U.S. technologies because Hutchison Whampoa executives have business connections to the Chinese government.

Money from the blind trust helped buy their homes, along with a timely loan from a good friend.

That would be the metaphorical "broke" (http://www.michellesmirror.com/2014/06/that-would-be-metaphorical-broke.html).
Snippet:
Quote
...  Well, there’s “broke,” there’s “dead broke” and then there’s the moral equivalency “broke” of the cognoscenti 1%.  The Clinton’s “broke” clearly falls under the latter category and might more accurately be described as “moral bankruptcy.”  ...

Hillary Clinton backpedals on ‘dead broke’ comments
By Geoff EarleJune 10, 2014 | 9:40am

WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton attempted to walk back remarks that she and her husband came out of the White House “dead broke” — saying she knows their life is “obviously blessed.”

“Let me just clarify that I fully appreciate how hard life is for so many Americans today,” Clinton said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Tuesday.

“Bill and I were obviously blessed. We worked hard for everything we got in our lives … So for me it’s just a reality what we faced when he got out of the White House, it meant that we just had to keep working really hard.”

Her clean-up effort came after Clinton kvetched about her past financial situation on ABC — even though her family’s income their last year in the White House was more than $400,000. Bill Clinton also signed an $8 million book advance, and the couple got a $1.3 million loan from a pal to buy their tranquil Chappaqua home.

“We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt,” Clinton said on Monday night. “We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea’s education. You know, it was not easy.”

Top Republicans and commentators immediately slammed the remarks as out of touch.

Clinton made the controversial comment during a carefully crafted kickoff to promote her book, “Hard Choices,” on ABC Monday night.

In the hour-long broadcast, the former secretary of state leveled a veiled political threat to muddy up a potential 2016 rival and brought up 69-year-old interviewer Diane Sawyer’s own age when pressed about her years.

The interview featured some intense sparring and blunt self-assessments. “I really didn’t have a good strategy for my campaign” in 2008, Clinton confessed.

On the attacks on the US Embassy in Benghazi, Clinton hedged: “I take responsibility, but I was not making security decisions.”

Asked about inadequate security at the US diplomatic facility there, which she oversaw as head of the State Department, Clinton at first said the facility was in the top 25 riskiest outposts. But when pressed by Sawyer, she said it was “maybe” in the top 10.

Rather than say intense criticism over Benghazi discouraged her from seeking the presidency, Clinton said the attacks were a reason to aim for the Oval Office.

“Actually it’s more of a reason to run. I do not believe our great country should be playing minor league ball,” she said.
Clinton resisted Sawyer’s efforts to get her to admit mistakes on Benghazi.

“There was a lack of appreciation and response to the level of threat,” Clinton said. But as for a cable on lacking security, she said, “Well no, that was never brought to me.”

“Age,” Sawyer said at one point — introducing a hot-button topic for Clinton, who would be 69 when she took office if she runs for president in 2016.

“Age, yes — isn’t it great to be our age,” Clinton responded with a laugh, turning the attention back on the interviewer. That prompted Sawyer to acknowledge, “I’m older than you are.”

Asked about her famous fall last year, Clinton said she would “probably” take blood thinners for life.

Asked directly if she’d release her medical records, Clinton spun: “I would do what other candidates have done, absolutely.”

She said she “probably” wouldn’t repeat her famous 1990s declaration of a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” But she said there was a “concerted political effort” against her husband and President Obama.

Asked about the declaration by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) that Monica Lewinsky was fair game in a potential 2016 campaign, Clinton only hinted at Paul’s liabilities. “If he decides to run, he’ll be fair game, too, for everybody,” she intoned.

She delivered a warning to Republican House members on a select committee investigating Benghazi.

Asked if she’d testify, Clinton said: “We’ll see what they decide to do, how they conduct themselves.”

But she wished Lewinsky well. “I hope that she is able to think about her future and construct a life that she finds meaning and satisfaction in,” Clinton said.

Hillary Clinton: On Second Thought, Maybe We Weren’t Really ‘Dead Broke’

Posted By Bryan Preston On June 10, 2014 @ 10:03 am In Politics | 4 Comments

She’s the most overrated politician in America! She thinks she’s brilliant but she’s really mediocre! She’s Hillary Clinton, the millionaire who makes more money on one speech than you make in a few years, and wants you to feel sorry for her!

Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday sought to contain the damage done by her comment that she and her husband were “dead broke” after he left the White House, saying that she understands the economic challenges facing many Americans.

“Let me just clarify … I fully appreciate how hard life is so for many Americans today,” Clinton said during a live interview on ABC News. “It’s an issue I’ve worked on and cared about my entire adult life.”

Yeah, right. The Clintons are a couple who have lived off of the taxpayer for their entire adult lives, and Hillary has lived entirely off of her husband as well. Well, that, plus graft. Don’t forget the graft, the cattle futures, the insanely profitable book deals, etc. Hillary Clinton is where she is precisely because she stood by her man. Her designer pantsuits cost more than your car.

Hillary spent the original interview justifying why she and Bill charge $200,000 a pop for giving speeches. She actually said it is better than getting a job — better as in more moral, not better as in so it’s easy she’d be a fool not to take advantage of the opportunity.

Clinton goes from “dead broke” to “obviously blessed”

By: Claire E. Healey
6/10/2014 03:39 PM

Hillary Clinton retracted a statement she made Monday that she and Bill were “dead broke” when they left the White House. Instead, she called herself “obviously blessed” this morning on “Good Morning America.”

“Let me just clarify that I fully appreciate how hard life is for so many Americans today,” Clinton said. “Bill and I were obviously blessed. We worked hard for everything we got in our lives and we continue to work hard, and we’ve been blessed in the last 14 years.”

Clinton’s earlier statement about her financial struggles was in defense of the money she has made through numerous speaking engagements. She said that she and Bill were in debt due to their daughter Chelsea’s education costs and the payments incurred from their multiple mortgages. They also had astronomical legal fees.

She added as part of her amendment this morning:

“As I recall we were something like $12 million in debt. We have a life experience that is clearly different in very dramatic ways from many Americans, but we also have gone through some of the same challenges as many people have. I worry a lot about people I know personally and people in this country who don’t have the same opportunities that we’ve been given.”

On CNN, Kiki McLean, former senior adviser to Hillary Clinton’s failed 2008 presidential run and a former aide to President Bill Clinton defended Hillary Clinton, doubled down on Hillary’s claim that she was “dead broke” and “struggled” after leaving the White House.

According to McClean, you and I have vastly different expectations than the ruling political class, which the Clintons are part of:

“There’s nothing fair with anybody who would insinuate that Hillary Clinton doesn’t understand the struggle of a middle class family,” McLean said. “She certainly grew up with one. And she gave a statement of fact when President Clinton and Mrs. Clinton left the White House, they were dead broke. Now, they have a life and a set of expectations that are different, and they’ve been fortunate to make some money.”

Hillary’s original comments made her sound out of touch, as if she spends all of her time with wealthy donors and thus feels poor in comparison.

To see how much wealth the Clintons have amassed shows you just how dysfunctional our government is.

But turning this horrible gaffe into a point worth defending is quite an impressive feat. Great job, Kiki!

"We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt. We had no money when we got there and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea’s education, you know, it was not easy.” — Hillary Clinton to Diane Sawyer

From the archives of the Westchester County Oral History Project, testimony of Hillary Rodham Clinton:

Times was hard back in ’01. I don’t mind saying. Hard. A — what’s that word? Struggle. That ware whut it was. Our time of struggle.

It waren’t just the lumbago keepin’ me up so bad I’d have to make myself a poultice of witch hazel and neem bark that was learned to me back in Little Rock by Chelsea’s au pair.

It waren’t just Bill pulling the overnight shift with that slave driver Old Man Burkle which made it so he’d only just be coming home to bed on the private plane right when I had to get up to punch my clock over to the Senate.

’Course Bill was up in the Chappaqua double-wide and I was in the Washington lean-to, but I can’t offend the Lord, I allus knew where Bill was on account of the LoJack I had put in him back in ’98.

I didn’t mind we wasn’t together. I reckoned he liked it up there in Westchester because of the special coffee they had there in that place, whatever it was, Starbucks I think it was called — he said you just couldn’t get it anywhere else that tasted the same.

Still, it was lonely for Bill, him there with no one to talk to but the five Secret Service agents and the stews on Old Man Burkle’s Gulfstream. He was sacrificin’, and I knowed it, and he knowed it too.

Also we had to have a place to keep my carpet bag.

Meantimes, I had to be down in DC for to do my piece tendin’ to the young’uns of New York state. Their folks had done the choosin’ of me back to Election Day and dadgum if I waren’t gonna do my all for them kids.

But that was where the strugglin’ come in, you see. It was them two places, the double-wide and the lean-to. Meantime, Chelsea needed the educating, and that school of hers, Stanford, wouldn’t accept our prize pig in trade for the spring tuition.

We was sore beset. Nights I’d take to sobbin’ over the candle starin’ at the ledger, tryin’ to figure out how to make ends meet. Bill had to go vegan cause we couldn’t even afford the jerky.

I mean, what with the presidential pension, the Arkansas governor’s pension, my paycheck from the gummint, add ’em up and that’s only 400K. I mean, thank the Lord for the Medicaid! I was fixing to apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit, was what I was gonna do.

Some clucked their tongues and said I got me a $8 million advance for my book just before we loaded up the truck and skedaddled out’a the White House. Them people don’t know nothin’.

Firstways, you don’t get the whole eight up front, you only get 2 million of the 8 million, and then your agent skims 200K offa the top a that, so you’re basically left with squat. Chicken feed that ain’t no good even for the chickens.

It waren’t until August 2001 that Bill made his book deal. Yes, it was a big’un, but we didn’t know he was gonna get a $15 million advance! We figgered $20,000 tops.

Even now it’s painin’ me to recall it — the same way it pained me the day I told Diane Sawyer we was “dead broke.”

Diane done paid for it later.
