2 countries with over a billion people each...
-
Remember the days when Japan‘s Economy was predicted to overtake ours one day?
-
What else does anyone expect to happen when you export all your manufacturing?
-
I keep hearing that China's economy is in big trouble. We'll see.

The Chinamen's growth rate is below 6% and that is using their over inflated numbers. They are in trouble and it isn't even because of exports. It's because internal demands are way down.
-
It is inevitable that countries with 3 to 4 times our population should catch us in absolute terms. I don't find that particularly disturbing.
The demise of the USA as the world's only military superpower is inevitable. We have not been the world's only economic superpower for a long time. Both China and Russia are leapfrogging us in certain military technologies, and as their resources grow China in particular stands a good chance of attaining superiority.
Right now is the time to lay the diplomatic foundations that will make this transition orderly, and I hope that is what Trump is trying to do. Some days I think so. Other days I wonder.
He's still better than Hillary would have been.

Sadly, massadvj, you are right.
The Twenty-First Century will ultimately become "China's century".
That time hasn't yet arrived, but it's coming.
Look at our youth, vis-a-vis theirs. How much more need be said?

I disagree. The Chinese have some self-limiting factors that I don't think they will be able to overcome.

In 11 years went from this little part to leap into #2? Call me skeptical.

Worry not, Nancy Pelosi has a plan to keep America number one. All we have to is keep increasing the number of Americans on unemployment.
-
So China will be #1 in a decade; really???
At the turn of the 20th century, Great Britain was considered the ranking economic power.
Yet British Capitalists knew it was not so; as Prussian technology far surpassed that of Britain.
Since the Shang Dynasty of 1480 BC, the only category in which China has led the world is in
the production of crap and of course, Marble Warships.
Assertion is too stupid for words.

I don't know what that means, but it made me laugh out loud. lol
This is NOT any about ANYONE HERE: I don't like theses kind of projections. Most are bogus. My personal bet peeve is the 20/20 hid sight and the coulda, woulda, shoulda gang. This smacks of that. WE DON'T KNOW what will happen by 2030.
A plague, sp? meteor hit, Tsunami, major earth quake, WAR. I used to date a man that liked to dream a lot. Wouldn't it be great to......or what would you spend a million dollars on? And so forth. All talk, no action, why dream. Nothing ever happened.
To me it was a waste of time; he did love to TALK! I was practical. Dream about a real goal, and how to achieve it, make some plans. But just to talk about, what might be, where to live, it was all pipe dreams. He is now dead at age 55.
So, it is like, worry about something that may never happen. Even scripture says something about this. I am tired, can't spell...

Yes. That was right around the time when one of my Econ profs mentioned that Japan's baby boom was getting close to retirement. Kind of like ours is today.

Not surprised
I’ve read “the Rise and Fall of the Great Powers†by Paul Kennedy. I have the book in my library.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rise_and_Fall_of_the_Great_Powers
Highly recommend. Every great nation eventually falls in history. I’m gutted it’s happening to my beloved USA but any student of history would know it had to happen sooner or later, and they all fall for the same reason(s). We never learn.
One day we won’t be number one. Whether it’s tomorrow or in a century ot a millennium ot 10,000 years. But it will happen. I personally think it will be this century. Hopefully not in my lifetime.

On the mark.
In our material world nothing, NOTHING, is eternal.
Man and everything he creates passes in time by Natural Law.
