Yes, the English speaking peoples are an odd lot.  We all let off fireworks to commemorate acts of treason against the British Crown -- those of us on longer subject to the Crown on the 4th of July to commemorate one that succeeded, those still subject to the Crown on the 5th of November to commemorate one that failed.
