Title: 1911 Parts Questions
Post by: txradioguy on October 09, 2017, 01:40:11 am
My 1911 is past the one year usage mark and I've put a LOT of rounds through it in that time.

What is the recommended time period or rounds fired requirement before replacing the recoil spring and the mainspring?

The recoil spring at least still feels pretty stiff and I haven't had any noticeable feed issues except for when I used aluminium ammo.

Just want to keep my 1911 in the best shape I can.

Would your armorer have what the Army recommends?

(Warning! Don't have any liquid in your mouth when reading this)

*pause*

I would ask but I'm in a unit right now that has no armorer nor does it have any weapons.

The following maintenance schedule is quoted directly from the Wilson Combat 1911 Auto Maintenance Manual by Bill Wilson.

Clean and Lube, Routine:

Lead bullet use every 300-500 rounds

Jacketed bullet use every 500-700 rounds

Carry pistols once a month

Clean and Lube, Thorough:

Every 5,000 rounds and/or every 3 months your pistol should be completely disassembled, cleaned and lubricated.

Spring Replacement:

Recoil spring every 2,000 rounds

Firing pin spring every 5,000 rounds

Hammer spring every 25,000 rounds

Just what I was looking for.  Looks like I'm still about a thousand rounds or so from my first spring replacement.  Thankfully they aren't very expensive and readily available.

Thanks for that list @Elderberry
