Missouri Republicans facing abortion-rights amendment that received overwhelming support

Abortion appears on track to be on the ballot in another Republican state after activists say they have gathered an overwhelming number of signatures.

Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, an abortion-rights group in Missouri, says it has garnered more than 380,000 signatures for a ballot measure to enshrine abortion into the state’s constitution. The group said on Friday it submitted the signatures for verification to the state secretary of state ahead of the May 5 deadline.

The proposed initiative needs roughly 172,000 verified signatures to appear on the ballot this year. If the required signatures are verified, the measure would either be put before voters during the August primary or the November general election.

The ballot measure would enshrine access to abortion through viability — roughly 24 weeks — with exceptions for the physical and mental health of the mother. Anti-abortion activists contend the vague exceptions could clear the way for unrestricted abortion.

Currently in Missouri, abortion is banned with exceptions for a medical emergency or the life of the mother. The state law went into effect after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in the 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

Actor Mark Hamill visited the White House, where he gushed over White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and President “Joebi-Wan Kenobi.”

“I called him ‘Mr. President.’ He said, ‘You can call me Joe.’ And I said, ‘Can I call you Joebi-Wan Kenobi?’ He liked that,” the Star Wars actor told reporters at the podium during a Friday White House press briefing while Jean-Pierre grinned behind him.

Burgum -- no. What has he done as a governor to distinguish himself? (as, say, DeSantis or Scott Walker) The guy is a "cypher politician". Convince me otherwise.

Rubio -- bad choice (and the problem with both candidates being "from" the same state). He's not going to bring in any more votes than Mr. Trump would win in Florida anyway.

Scott -- NO. This guy will prove to be a liability, not an asset. Again, no!

That leaves J.D. Vance.
I've mentioned his name for months in this forum as who should run with Mr. Trump.

Mr. Vance won't need a speechwriter -- he's a writer by past trade.
He could even smooth out Mr. Trump's speeches.
And he seems to have had a decent record in the Senate, as well.

If he gets the nod and wins the job, he can also leave a Senate seat that Republicans should be able to retain.

And again, I'd like to offer Rand Paul.

Out of these four I would like Vance and it would help to win Ohio...the Dems will throw everything they have to at the Senate race..

as far as Rand Paul...I like him too!

Hey dude! As an aside, I sure like seeing you back around. Great to see you posting!

And you'll note, I said a benevolent kingship. Not merely a kingship. And the problems noted are why we are left with a Republic being the best we can do. Technically, the Christian Republics of the West were formed as regencies in waiting for the glorious Return of the King... Maranatha!

Perhaps if that duty were once again emphasized...

True that a benevolent kingship/dictator would be better; the rub is in getting all and only benevolent kings.  The errors are bound to be catastrophic.

"That leaves J.D. Vance."  Good choice.  I read his book.

Wasn't it George Washington who warned against entangling alliances...?

True. But at that time we didn't have world wide entanglements due to economic and strategic alliances.

I truly wish we could go back to isolation policies...but once the door has been opened, I don't see how.

A parliamentary system with short term limits and head of state drawn by lottery (with exceptions only for the dangerously insane and convictions for serious felonies) would probably be better than a kingship.
