Title: D.C. sues Exxon, BP, Shell, Chevron over climate
Post by: Elderberry on June 26, 2020, 10:48:25 am
Houston Chronicle by  James Osborne June 25, 2020

The District of Columbia sued Exxon Mobil and other large oil companies Thursday over their contribution to climate change, adding the nation's capital to a growing list of states seeking to hold the oil sector accountable.

In recent years large oil companies have become increasingly vocal about the need to address climate change,  but the suit tackles a long period when, despite warnings from their own scientists, oil executives openly questioned studies showing that greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels were warming the planet.

"For decades, these oil and gas companies spent millions to mislead consumers and discredit climate science in pursuit of profits,” Washington D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine said in a statement.
