 Biden administration imposes sweeping regulations on power plants


The Biden administration issued sweeping new rules this week that crack down on power plant pollution and could force many coal plants to shut down unless they undertake costly upgrades to capture smokestack emissions.

The new rules - sure to be challenged in court - mandate strict controls on carbon dioxide emissions at existing coal plants and newly built natural gas plants, setting the stage for a significant infrastructure buildout to capture and dispose of CO2 emitted at such plants in order to comply; existing gas plants are not included in the new rules.
 
The changes come as the industry copes with a shifting generation mix, with solar and wind projects being added to the grid, at a time when artificial intelligence, data centers and vehicle electrification are sharply driving up demand.

Utilities say more gas-fired power plants are needed for reliability and to replace coal, and some say they need aging coal plants to stay online longer than expected.

Here's why tire companies love EVs

The tire business is a business of low growth, low margins and extreme competition. Tire makers are at the mercy of of raw material prices. And about half of customers are largely indifferent to the brand of tires they buy. Price is the main differentiator. But industry analysts say EVs provide tire makers with the biggest growth opportunity they have seen in decades. AlixPartners estimates that tires on EVs require 20 percent more frequent replacement and can cost 50 percent more.

Biden is the least popular president in 70 years — below even Nixon and Carter, scathing poll finds

Joe Biden is the least popular commander in chief at this point of his presidency in the last 70 years, below even Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, according to a blistering new poll — imperiling his chances of re-election.

Biden, 81, notched a dismal 38.7% job approval rating for the first quarter of 2024, the venerable Gallup Poll found in a survey released Friday, three points lower than that of the one-term George H.W. Bush at the same point in his presidency.

“With about six months remaining before Election Day, Biden stands in a weaker position than any prior incumbent,” the pollsters concluded.

When water intrusion and salt don't corrode batteries or cause them to catch fire perhaps they'll be more applicable to a greater part of the country -- until then, EV's are in the long run are futile, not dependable and more costly.

I was wondering where all those batteries are going to be stored--in the cold shed, or in the house or attached garage? At least I can run the gas gadgets dry and store them for the winter, and keep the fuel (stabilized) in a non-heated outbuilding that would be relatively cheap to replace.

And no one has mentioned the expense of having those extra batteries to swap out. Just with hand tools, which are handy, and of which I have a nice assortment, two batteries cost nearly as much as (or more than) the tools. That's for hand tools, I would think a 6 hour battery for a zero turn mower would be significantly more.
