Eight people have been taken to the hospital after a nine-alarm fire at 298 Beacon St. in the Back Bay, Boston emergency services officials said.

Firefighters responded at 2:43 p.m. to the building, a 4-story brick rowhouse, where a fire extended upward from the basement, fire officials said.

Nick Martin, a Boston EMS spokesman, said in a telephone interview that eight people had been transported to the hospital, six to Brigham and Women’s Hospital and two to Massachusetts General Hospital. He said he had no information on their condition and said he did not know whether those injured were all firefighters or if civilians were included.
