The great state of Tennessee has recently had 2 inmates choosing the electric chair over lethal injection, the article seems to indicate they have no other choices such as hanging or by firing squad:

An inmate in the US state of Tennessee is to be executed by electric chair after arguing that a lethal injection would involve suffering.
David Earl Miller, who has spent 36 years on death row, is among an increasing number of inmates attempting to avoid lethal injection following several botched executions.
Another Tennessee inmate, Edmund Zagorski, was electrocuted last month.
Lethal injection is the state's main method of execution.

Seriously, I am appalled that this question exists in today's USA. A big dose of Fentanyl will put you out painlessly and permanently. Heck, even a small dose often does it accidentally.

Nitrogen asphyxiation. I really don't know why this has not become the standard method of execution, it is likely completely pain free, with no unusual sensations until the loss of consciousness.

Good point. The lethality certainly should give narcotics addicts pause before knowingly using it for a high. (Unfortunately, a lot of weaker narcotics are laced with fentanyl. A narcotics-naïve user--for example, someone with only a little experience with Oxycontin--will die from fentanyl-laced Oxy. Caveat emptor. [I think that's Latin for "know your pusher and be sure you never make him mad."])
As I recall, the lethal dose for fentanyl is frightfully close to the effective dose for achieving significant pain control from it. By the same token, the lethal dose is probably just above the euphoria-inducing dose for addicts. I suspect that fentanyl is one of the main causes of the 200 or so narcotics overdose deaths we have every day in the USA.
(As an aside, it occurs to me that some folks might have discarded the fentanyl idea for executions because death is likely not instantaneous, even in absolutely lethal doses. [Then again, so what if that's true?])

I'd go with an injection of Aids or Syph. Death sentence? You bet. Fast acting? Not at all.

Had a dog put down last year. Vet went with the blue juice. Doggie just fell asleep then it's heart stopped. No pain.
