During one of his abrupt verbal asides on the political stump Wednesday night in Indianapolis, Donald Trump proudly noted another endorsement from the sports world.
Mike Tyson.
The former heavyweight champion, of course, has a history in Indianapolis. It was here where he was convicted of raping beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington in 1992 — and subsequently spent three years in prison.
"Mike Tyson endorsed me," Trump told the crowd. "I love it. He sent out a tweet. Mike. Iron Mike. You know, all the tough guys endorse me. I like that, OK?
"But Mike said, 'I love Trump. I endorse Trump.' And that's the end. I'm sure he doesn't know about your economic situation in Indiana. But when I get endorsed by the tough ones, I like it, because you know what? We need toughness now. We need toughness."
Trump was a supporter of Tyson's after the conviction, saying that "to a large extent" he was "railroaded." Trump had a financial interest in the case because Tyson's fights made money for his hotels.

Trump is despicable ... obviously they have a history together ... Trump stated that Tyson was railroaded because Tyson made Trump money, therefore he gave Tyson a pass.

Purely by coincidence, Trump’s advocacy for Tyson came at a time when he stood to make a huge profit if he was released. As Mother Jones noted in December, “Tyson’s bouts had been highly lucrative for Trump’s casinos, which paid millions to host the fights but reaped millions more in revenues from the surge in gambling that resulted during these highly anticipated events.”

If the Donald were to say the best thing to do with an unwated litter of puppies would be to put them in a sack and drown them, they would say he's right.

I have from fuzzy memories from that period in time (I was into Quaalude and tequila sunrise cocktails) but it was clear that Tyson was guilty on those charges. People bent over backwards to get him off and he still was found guilty.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I'm newly stunned by it every day. How did we get here? Trump admitted last July that he was a Democrat in many ways. That should have been an immediate disqualification, but no one seemed to bat an eye.

Tyson was convicted of rape and served three years in prison. Trump still appears to be where he was when he said this:

Everyone in the media should. But they are in love with a Trump/Hillary ratings bonanza, and so they will wait until after the convention to cut him off at the knees.

The politically observant portion of the GOP (a.k.a. the GOP primary voter) has cocooned itself in its own little echo chamber of blogs, websites, and talk radio. And this is the result. We saw it in 2012 with Romney, too.
The 'GOPe' even came up with a plan to counteract this pernicious threat. But the plurality has doubled-down on the very problem that caused our loss in 2012. And anyone not supporting Trump can see the echo-chamber those supporters are cocooning themselves inside.
That's why we're left with Trump in the lead for the primaries.

It's a pattern repeated over and over. Trump makes clearly wrong statement, then tacks on a string of non sequiturs, and the interviewer just lets it go, as if the dog has not really shat upon the carpet, despite the smell that is overpowering.
