Title: Shooting Prompts Evacuation Of Terminal 3 At LAX
Post by: happyg on November 01, 2013, 05:32:20 pm
Los Angeles Airport Police Friday said a at least one suspect was in reportedly custody following a shooting at Terminal 3 at LAX.

CBS’s John Miller reported that the suspect or suspects entered the terminal wearing camouflage and opened fire around 9:30 a.m., wounding at least three people.

Preliminary indications show that the suspect(s) was targeting TSA employees, according to Miller.

A TSA employee was reportedly shot in the leg in addition to two other people, however, CBS2/KCAL9 has not been able to confirm that report.

Terminal 3 was evacuated and cordoned off and arrival and departure roads to the airport, in addition to Century Boulevard, were closed.

Traffic was backed up on the westbound 105 Freeway as cars were unable to exit onto Century Boulevard.

A large box of ammunition was also recovered on LAX property, Miller said. The LAPD Bomb Squad was on scene trying to clear any suspicious packages.

Passenger Robert Perez told CBS2 that TSA agents came through the terminal and yelled that a man had a gun.

“I heard popping and everybody dropped to the ground,” Perez said.

“There are a couple hundred people standing there not knowing what to do. Mostly people exiting the airport on foot, walking down Century,” passenger Kelly Kahl said.

Aerial shots from Sky2 showed buses were transporting passengers that had disembarked from planes onto the runway area.

All departing flights out of LAX have been grounded, according to airport officials. All arriving flights have been delayed or stopped.

The Los Angeles Police Department has been placed on citywide tactical alert.

Other Southland airports, including Bob Hope International Airport in Burbank, are on heightened alert.

FOX news website is still saying the gunman was taken into custody. I think we have all learned by now to take none of the first news as fact.    All the news stations want to claim "You heard it here first" even if they take a chance they may be reporting wrong information.     And FOX is guilty of this more I think than the others.

Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport has been shut down after a shooting incident, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. Local news reported 3 people being removed from the scene, including a TSA employee, who was rumored to have been shot in the leg with a rifle at the Virgin counter; KCAL 9 also reported that a big box of ammunition has been found by police, and that one suspect was wearing camouflage. KCAL 9 added that "multiple suspicious packages" have been found by the police. Other reports suggest that two people were wounded, including the suspect. A triage unit has been set up. One suspect has been taken into custody.

All vehicle and pedestrian traffic into and out of the airport has been limited. LAPD is doing a sweep of the arrival area of Terminal 3. One witness, Robert Perez, said that TSA agents shouted that a man had a gun in the terminal. “I heard popping and everybody dropped to the ground,” Perez said. Another witness reported a dozen shots fired. A Federal Aviation Authority map already shows flight slowdowns thanks to the incident; the FAA was put on a ground hold.

At least one terminal was evacuated.

UPDATE: President Obama has been briefed on the situation at LAX, and the White House is taking the lead on the investigation into and response to the shooting. CBS News now reports that the shooter is an off-duty TSA agent, and that the TSA agent who was shot has now died. The report on the identity of the TSA shooter has been seconded by the Associated Press.

An eyewitness reported to ABC News Radio that the “fairly young” shooter holding a rifle shot perhaps 20 times after asking the witness, “Are you TSA?” When the witness shook his head, he “moved on.” A TSA officer holding the witness’ shoes was shot.

So we essentially have a disgruntled employee who actually did a crime we can call "workplace violence"....unlike Major Hasan, who screamed and laughed "God is Great!"

Strange that this guy didn't just wait until they got off work....if it were personal.   Why choose suicide by cop?

Can't wait to see how much information they release about this guy.  Can't paint him 'crazy' because it draws attention to the quality of their entire TSA staff.

LAX shooting: The latest.

A gunman armed with a high-powered rifle opened fire at Los Angeles International Airport Friday morning, killing a TSA agent and wounding several others.

Authorities said the gunman fired at several locations in Terminal 3 before police shot him. LAX police did not reveal his condition.

The motive was unclear. A federal law enforcement official said that the gunman was a ticketed passenger entering the airport.

Officials don’t believe the gunman has ever worked for TSA. Law enforcement sources had earlier told The Times the gunman was a TSA employee.

Los Angeles Police Department anti-terrorism officials were on the scene, but sources said they don't believe the suspect was tied to any known terrorist groups. They believe he acted alone.

At a press conference, the Los Angeles Fire Department treated seven people at the scene and transported six to local hospitals.

Patrick Gannon, the LAX police chief,  said gunman came into Terminal 3 at 9:20 a.m. He pulled an assault rifle out of his bag and began firing. He moved into the screening area and continued shooting, Gannon said. He went passed the security area further into the terminal.

Authorities tracked him down and shot him near a Burger King.

Vernon Cardenas, 45, of West Hollywood said he was at the airport on his way to Philadelphia when the shooting occurred about 9:30 a.m. in Terminal 3.

“Sitting down, all of a sudden, literally just out of the blue, you hear a rumble in the background and a couple of seconds later, people are running at me,” said Cardenas, who does casting for the Fox television show "MasterChef." He described the scene as “mayhem,” with couples crying and parents who couldn’t find their children.

Brian Adamick, 43, said he was getting ready to fly to Chicago for his brother’s wedding and was boarding a Spirit Airlines flight at Gate 32 in Terminal 3.

He said people were running through the terminal, away from a security area. Adamick said he went through an emergency exit downstairs onto the tarmac with several other passengers.

“While I was on the tarmac, I heard two gunshots from the same area where the people had been running and screaming,” he said.

A few minutes after he got outside, he said buses showed up to help evacuate passengers. He saw a wounded TSA agent board one of the buses. The man’s ankle was bloody: “it looked like it was straight out of the movies,” Adamick said.

The man, told him, “I got shot, I’m fine.” He told passengers not to worry about him and that he had been shot before, Adamick said.

A White House official said President Obama had been informed of the incident:"The President has been briefed about the shooting at LAX. We will continue to stay in touch with our federal and local partners. The LAPD is leading the response and investigation. We urge citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions from the first responders on site. The president will continue to receive briefings throughout the day.”

Tory Belleci of the television show "Mythbusters" tweeted: "Heard gun shots then eve11:07 a.m.: A press conference at LAX is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., according to LAPDryone starting running for the door. Not sure if anyone was hurt. #LAX."

TV footage showed dozens of offficers swarming the airport. Images also showed a law enforcement officer being treated by paramedics. He appeared to be alert. Another officer had a bloody hand.

Gunman opens fire at LAX, killing TSA worker and wounding others

Quote
A man carrying anti-government material and an assault rifle shot his way through security at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, killing one Transportation Security Administration worker, wounding as many as three others and sending terrified travelers diving for cover and fleeing onto the tarmac, authorities and witnesses said.

The gunman, identified by law-enforcement officials as 23-year-old Paul Anthony Ciancia, was shot by law enforcement and taken into custody in critical condition. The motive is not clear but it's believed he had anti-government views based on written materials he was carrying, the officials said.

Federal officials told NBC News it was unclear whether Ciancia was targeting the TSA or was trying to shoot his way through to get further into the airport. But one witness said the shooter, who calmly walking through the terminal with his weapon, approached him with a one-word question.
Advertise | AdChoices

"All he said was, 'TSA?' Just like that," Leon Saryan told MSNBC.

The shooting started at about 9:20 a.m. local time at Terminal 3, which serves Virgin America and other airlines. Ciancia took out the rifle and opened fire at the security checkpoint, then went far into the terminal, where he was captured after exchanging fire with law enforcement, authorities said.

When the gunfire erupted, travelers who were waiting to snake through the security line suddenly had to abandon their suitcases and hit the ground.

“We were just standing there in line and somebody started shooting,” said Nick Pugh, a witness, who told NBC Los Angeles that he heard eight to 10 shots. “Everyone dropped to the floor and started crawling along the ground.”

LAX Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon describes a gunman opening fire in the terminal, then approaching and firing at TSA screeners, before continuing into the airport, where he engaged in gunfire with officers and eventually taken into custody.

The shooting brought one of the nation’s busiest airports to a standstill.

The Federal Aviation Administration grounded flights at LAX, where 1,500 flights take off and land every day. Passengers heading there for departing flights were stuck in colossal traffic jams. Some abandoned their rides and rolled their suitcases the last distance to the airport.

Alleged LAX gunman identified as Paul Ciancia from Pennsville, New Jersey

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/national_world&id=9309640

Quote
CHopper 6 HD was over the Salem County home of the Ciancia family on Friday evening where a police presence could be seen.

Action News has also learned that Ciancia's brother received a text message from him earlier in the day that was 'worrisome.'

Because of that, Ciancia's father called the Pennsville police chief, who reached out to authorities in Los Angeles.

However, that contact was made after the shooting had already happened.

Los Angeles police Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger said the gunman was apparently wounded following an exchange of gunfire with officers and was in custody.

(Editor's Note: ABC News previously reported the gunman had died, but has since said there are 'conflicting reports' about his condition and can no longer confirm he died.)

Tim Kauffman, a spokesman for the American Federation of Government Employees in Washington, confirmed Friday that a Transportation Security Administration officer was killed. Kauffman said the union's information comes from their local officials in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon said that at about 9:20 a.m., the gunman pulled what he described as an "assault rifle" from a bag and began firing inside Terminal 3. He then went to the security screening area, where he fired more shots and went into the secure area of the terminal, Gannon said.

Officers exchanged fire with the gunman and apprehended him; police believe he was the only shooter, Gannon said. "As you can imagine, a large amount of chaos took place in this entire incident," he said.

Six people were taken to the hospital, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. It's unclear whether the gunshot victims were among the group.

Some passengers who already had cleared security rushed onto the tarmac to evacuate, while others were locked down in airport restaurants and lounges. The airport was being swept as a precaution and the bomb unit was on scene.

Air traffic was affected nationwide as the Federal Aviation Administration grounded flights that had not yet departed for LAX. Some flights were still allowed to depart what is one of the nation's busiest airports. Cars were blocked from entering.

Witness Brian Keech said he heard about a dozen gunshots from inside a security gate at the terminal, which has been evacuated.

Ben Rosen was sitting at the Starbucks in Terminal 3 eating oatmeal at about 9:20 a.m. when he heard gunfire erupt and people start running in all directions and others crouching on the ground. Rosen got on the ground and another passenger said "don't worry we're safe."

Then more gunshots erupted. He grabbed his phone and tried to lie down as flat on the ground as he could. Police showed up with their guns drawn, shouting, "This is not a drill! Hands up!"

Everyone put their hands up and then were led out of the airport terminal to the international terminal, Rosen said.

As they were led out they saw broken glass from a window that looked like it'd been shot out. Rosen left his bag behind.

It seems to be mostly the OWS lot that use it, though "bleep the police" is popular in many places.

NJ police: Dad called, worried about LAX suspect

Quote
PENNSVILLE, N.J. (AP) — The young man believed to have carried out a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport had sent a sibling a text message mentioning suicide, leading their father to seek authorities' help in finding him, a New Jersey police chief said Friday.

Paul Ciancia's father called Pennsville Police Chief Allen Cummings early Friday afternoon saying another of his children had received a text message from the 23-year-old "in reference to him taking his own life," the chief told The Associated Press.

The elder Ciancia asked for help in locating Paul, Cummings said. The chief called Los Angeles police, which sent a patrol car to Ciancia's apartment. It wasn't clear whether the police visited before or after the airport shooting.

"Basically, there were two roommates there" Cummings said. "They said, 'We saw him yesterday and he was fine.'"

He told Cianci's father that because of his son's age, he couldn't take a missing persons report.

A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity identified Paul Ciancia as the man who pulled a semi-automatic rifle from a bag and shot his way past a security checkpoint at the airport, killing a security officer and wounding two other people.

The gunman was wounded in a shootout with police and was taken into custody, Los Angeles police said.

The official who identified Ciancia was briefed at the airport on the investigation and requested anonymity because was he was not authorized to speak publicly.

A motive wasn't immediately clear. The shooter was wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a handwritten note that said he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs," the official said.

A second law enforcement official confirmed the identity, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

The Pennsville police department has had no dealings with the younger Ciancia, Cummings said.

Outside the father's home Friday in Pennsville — in southern New Jersey across the Delaware River from Wilmington, Del. — a police cruiser blocked the long driveway to the home, which isn't visible from the road. Phone calls weren't answered, and efforts to reach siblings were also unsuccessful.

Neighbor Josh Pagan, 17, said that he would sometimes encounter Ciancia at orthodontist appointments, but that it had been at least two years since the last one.

"He was never weird toward me. He never gave me any weird vibes," he said, adding that in the 10 years he's lived across the street from the Ciancia family "they've been nothing but nice to us."

Ciancia's father owns an auto body shop, Cummings said.

"I've been here 23 years and they are a good family," he said.

UPDATED 6:41 p.m. EST

(CBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - Paul Ciancia, the 23-year-old man identified as the Los Angeles airport shooting suspect, had apparently made references to suicide in a text message sent to a family member of his earlier Friday, a New Jersey police chief says.

PICTURES: Shooting at LAX

Pennsville Township Police Chief Allen Cummings says Ciancia's father called him early Friday afternoon saying another of his children had received a text message from his son Paul "in reference to him taking his own life."

Cummings says the elder Ciancia asked him for help in locating Paul. The chief says he called Los Angeles police, who sent a patrol car to Ciancia's apartment.

There, two roommates said they had seen him Thursday and that he was fine.

Cummings says he told Ciancia's father that because of the son's age, he couldn't take a missing persons report. He says his department had no dealings with the younger Ciancia.

A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity identified the suspect as the younger Ciancia.

U.S. law enforcement officials have confirmed that the suspected gunman has a family address in New Jersey but that he spent some time in the Los Angeles area.

A preliminary review of the terror data bases and watch lists find no connections to Ciancia. And he does not have any significant police record.

Also, sources say, despite some reports to the contrary, the suspect is still alive.

Law enforcement sources told CBS News that "anti-government, anti-TSA writings" were found in the shooter's carry-on style bag.

Authorities believe a lone gunman was behind the shooting at LAX Friday morning that left multiple victims wounded, Los Angeles Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon said at a press conference. Gannon said the gunman was taken into custody following an officer-involved shooting.

Gannon said the gunman entered Terminal 3 of the airport at about 9:30 a.m., PST, pulled an assault rifle out of a bag and began to open fire. The gunman then proceeded up into the screening area and continued shooting, according to Gannon. He said the gunman got "far, very far back into the terminal."

He said the individual was tracked through the airport and authorities engaged him in gunfire inside Terminal 3. It was then that the suspect was taken into custody.

Los Angeles Fire Chief Jim Featherstone said the Los Angeles Fire Department treated seven individuals and transported six of those individuals to area hospitals.

A male TSA officer was killed in connection to the shooting. The union representing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says the male officer who was killed was a Behavior Detection Officer (BDO) who was the travel document checker at the checkpoint area, had recently transferred to LAX from Montana, and had no prior interaction with the shooter.

CBS Los Angeles has reported one 40-year-old male is dead in connection to the shooting. It is unclear whether the 40-year-old male is the TSA officer.

Still, my first reaction on hearing someone targeted a TSA agent was "who can blame him?"
My apologies.

Picture of possible rifle used in

Can't possibly be. That looks like a 30 round magazine laying there. Those are illegal in CA. The law prevents them from being used by criminals, right?
