The great exodus out of America’s blue cities

Am I the only one in my spinning class at Equinox in Manhattan who’s fed up paying $200 every month for a gym with clean showers, $3,000 in rent every month for an apartment without cockroaches and $8 every morning for a cup of coffee? Am I the only one moving through the greater part of New York City boroughs and seeing an inexorable march of urban decay matched with the discomfort of crowding and inexplicable costs? I know I am not.

New York is the most expensive city in America. Its lower-cost neighborhoods are riddled with crime and homelessness. Its public schools, some of which are among the worst in the nation, look more like prisons than places of learning.

With between up to 50 percent of their paycheck going to a combination of federal, local and city taxes, not including other consumer taxes baked into every aspect of their consumer practices, residents don’t even have the comfort of knowing that their tax expenditures are going to the improvement of their lives in the city. New York infamously misuses the hard-earned tax revenues of its citizens in ways that scarcely benefit them.

Eventually, city and state taxes, fees, and regulations become so burdensome that people and corporations jump ship. More people are currently fleeing New York than any other metropolitan area in the nation. More than 1 million people have moved out of New York City since 2010 in search of greener pastures, which amounts to a negative net migration rate of 4.4 percent....

...Texas is the No. 1 state people move trucks to, with states like Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina and Colorado rounding out the top 10. The states people are fleeing? New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois — and at the top, California....

That "New York is for the rich and the poor." was not a new saying when I heard it said in the 1950s.

"With about $85 billion in annual spending, New York
City’s budget is bigger than that of all but a handful
of states.": http://www.ibo.nyc.ny.us/iboreports/understandingthebudget.pdf (http://www.ibo.nyc.ny.us/iboreports/understandingthebudget.pdf)

I go to a weekly writing group in San Antonio- mostly leftists who fled California and the Rust Belt. They are vicious Trump haters and big Beatoff supporters. I make it clear that I do not agree with the politics and suggest we discuss writing instead of politics. I wouldn't attend if I didn't get good feedback.

Like locusts, having stripped bare the vegetation of prosperity, they move onto greener and lusher environs to do the same.

A little leaven, leavens the entire lump.

I wish Texas all the good fortune, that can be had from being the growth wonderland.

In the 50s and 60s California grew very fast, the schools were excellent.

It produced people like Reagan, too.

This 'aint the 1950's and 60's.  The export growth from urban blue state refugees is big government socialism.

They do not make excellent schools, but impose the very curriculums that led them to ruin.

Texas goes "blue" (more accurately red-commie) from these exoduses.

This nation will never elect another Ronald Reagan, because the the idea of limited government is abhorrent to them.  They want all-encompassing nany-state.  It's what they created in the states they are leaving, and will create the same thing in the states they are moving to.

Already watching it happen in Nashville as refugees from Chicago and Detroit are turning a once Conservative city 'blue'.

Red states need a litmus test for all new immigrants coming from your basic Commie Pinko fagtastic indoctrinated states.  Must answer two questions before admittance for permanent residency.

When are you leaving and why haven't you left already?

Sigh....

The article is true, and I see the results of this fairly regularly.

Some fool actually has a "Beto" sign up in my neighborhood.

Really?
In Sugar Land?
Ft. Bend County?

There were "Hope and Change" signs in front of a house or two in 2008.
I was hoping it was just an Obamanation, but now it seems, unfortunately it was not.

Okay, I'll bite...
What are the two questions?

Someone brought Betoff stickers, a direct rip-off of Whataburger- same logo saying Whatabeto- to my SA meeting. I gave him a look and shoved it away. "Not for me!" He apologized at the next meeting. I hope Whataburger sues them for copyright infringement.

Haven't seen a Beatoff sign in the Hill Country. Hope I don't.

Yep.
We're too close to Houston, that's the deal now.
Even with our close location were were just 40K population (37K, maybe?), 20-25 yrs ago, and still some rural areas.
It's over 100K now, rural areas are gone.

I gotta move further west or south.
Just further out.

How are things going with the refurbishment?

Getting closer.  Carpet is going down today.  Tile and the hardwood are already down.  Still need counter-tops and associated sinks.

I'm trying to decide how big a levee I can afford when we get the house rebuild completed.

Exodus from states like California?
Stop kidding yourselves.

For every white that leaves California, there are 100,000 non-whites who would migrate there if they only could get themselves into the USA.

Perhaps 1,000,000 ... or more.

Many (most?) liberal women that move to Texas eventually become soccer moms. Here's the path:

1. They first snarl at men that open doors for them...I CAN DO THAT MYSELF!!!
2. Shortly after moving here, they notice that women make themselves up before going out, even to go to the grocery store (that one's courtesy of my sister, during her visit here 20 years ago...it floored her).
3. They don't get why complete strangers say hello to them on the street.
4. Eventually, they're invited for a date, and are flummoxed when their date insists on picking up the check. At that point, the walls start crumbling around them.
5. They get sucked into fantasy football, because everyone they know is doing it.
6. By the end of the season, they're able to extol the virtues of the cover two defense.
7. It may take a few years, but marriage and babies follow.

Personally, my wife hates that I spend too much time following Gonzaga basketball. lol, but she was the one spending hours in the Zag store during our visit to Spokane last summer. She (and I) were totally blown away how the players responded to the 500 campers at that week's hoop camp.  My 7 YO grandson bonded with several players, particularly Josh Perkins, Zach Norvelle, Corey Kispert and Jesse Wade. My 16 YO son still talks about playing Josh Perkins one on one.

Corey took time out from his evening workout to give him a 30 minute instruction class, punctuated by putting my grandson on his shoulders so he could dunk it.

My next trip to Spokane will be summer of 2019, my grandson will be nearly nine, a great age for a hoops camp.
