The newly elected House majority leader is telling religious conservatives that he knows they're frustrated and promising, quote: "We will unite."
Kevin McCarthy said at a conference of conservative Christian leaders that, quote, "I hear the message."
McCarthy appeared before the Faith and Freedom Coalition a day after winning election as leader to replace Eric Cantor. Cantor was ousted by a tea party candidate in his Virginia primary last week.
McCarthy is an establishment-aligned figure whose elevation frustrated some of the more conservative House Republicans. He used his appearance at Friday's conference to reintroduce himself, describing his upbringing in small-town California and how he started a deli after winning the lottery.
He talked about his belief in God and limited government.
